Hi
Went shopping today to get food and when we left the store car park, the car felt a bit odd. I noticed a miss and hiccup on the slip road to the bypass and once on the bypass as i tried to gather speed the engine failsafe came on and the car ran like crap in a weird pulsating fashion. Managed to make it off the bypass and checked the engine all looked ok and when i switched it off and re started all was good.
Drove the remaining couple of miles home with the car still indicating a slight stumble and i put the laptop on to check the codes.

When the MAF goes bad you will also get the yellow gear light on the bottom right of the cluster, you will think it's your tranny going bad.just change the MAF.
I needed the car for work at 6am today so I cleaned the maf in Isopropyl last night, will get a new one as soon as I can

Will a new MAF need coding or is it just plug and play ?

Kenny I'm not so sure its MAF but see what you see.
The "DK" in the other codes stands for Drosselklappen (excuse if my german is misspelled but its more or less that) which = throttle body and... you've read the issues w/ the throttle bodies on the TU's, right? I think those are equally likely to be your issue. If you get a failsafe that threatends to strand you, pop the intake tube off, and work the plate full-span back and forth by hand to 'scrub' the pots in side back and forth. That usually works to get it going for a while... Eventually the failsafes will get more frequent and you'll have to do something about it but in meantime that will almost always get you unstuck.
If the car is stalling at stops and just having a few hiccups before the failsafe comes on, you can try on / off WOT runs to emulate the full-span scrub... that actually works a bit too (prob not quite as good as the hand scrub but more fun!)
I only have about 100 posts about this stuff I think... prob shoulda just linked to another old one... :P

Cheers GG I did think there could also be a throttle body problem due to the way the throttle was acting up the first time it occurred.
I keep clearing the codes but it still comes back as a maf fault. I have a new MAF on the way, maybe I should get a new throttle body also.

IF the DK don't come back then hey - 'let it ride' for now but just sayin'... thats' what those are pointin at and in case the symptoms get worse... Generally MAF problems will NOT cause a FAILSAFE tho'... just mixture limit exceeded etc... But yeah do one at a time and see what the MAF gets you... seems like its definitely bad (or the wires are screwd up but you'd have looked at that Im sure)

I unplugged the maf to check it and the engine ran rougher without it so the maf is working but i still have a new one on the way.
Sometimes it seems with these engines that one fault can can be caused by something else.
For example i had been seeing codes for Knock sensors bank one and when i went back into bank 2 to get the trigger wheel right for the vanos which had been slightly off due to the timing case not being fully down in the right place, when i checked engine codes again he knock sensor code has never come back.
Anyway i have to look at this at the weekend but i'm still using it to get to work for 6am hopefully i will have all the parts by weekend.

How to troubleshoot your MAF. The guy is a Ford mechanic but he's good.

Well I've installed the new Maf and it does not solve the problem i cleared all the codes but maf error came back again so i'm waiting for a new throttle body to arrive.

Watch the video I linked above. It'll give you direction.

Of note, a single problem can cause many codes to be set, none of which may be the actual problem.
Will your laptop diagnostic system allow you to record real time sensor data while driving?
Watch this about the "Italian tune up".

Yeah I appreciate the joke reference and almost made it myself, but in this case we're not talking the traditional "italian tune up" errr 'logic'... we're talking about doing something very specific aka forcing the throttle body to cycle full travel which in daily driving it hardly ever does for most people...
Not terrible video tho'. When it started I was all "oh no, yet another douchebag trustpuppy wanker running around in an exotic trying to be a 'YouTube car guy' celebritard ..." but was pleased to be wrong...

Well it has a new MAF and I have swapped the throttle body for another that I had in the garage and I still keep getting this error, any ideas where I can look now.
The car seems to drive better and I've not noticed it stumble anymore. As soon as I clear the code it returns.

Only occurs once so far in that scan.
Voltage too low - could be a connector problem on the MAF. Check your connector and wires back for some inches for cracks or other flaws... check DME connectors?

Just been out and done 40 miles or so, running great with good power, i will check the plug and wires from the maf GG.

Swap in one from a car currently functioning properly, or test the brand new one on another car if possible. I've received defective MAF's out of the box - in the past I had even received one that "worked" (fixed the issues the car was having) but would throw codes
I actually have such a bad track record with new MAF's that I now prefer to source good used parts instead of new...
WOW !! That is crazy.
If I can try the known good used one, or try this in another car I will but my MAF is mounted in the charge tube to the blower.
This episode started after a fill up and at first I thought it was related but when I got the car home and put it on inpa what I found is in the first post.

- There are all kinds of tests for MAF using fancy equipment.
- The most practical way is to find an empty street to test drive, unplug the MAF electrical connector, car will go into Limp Mode, it will run but Limp Mode.
- If car now runs better than before, MAF is bad.
- Stick to BMW, VDO, Siemens and do NOT use aftermarket if possible. Or find a good one at junk yards.
