    Using transmission for braking

2005 X5 has 195,000 miles. I have a bit of a shake under braking so I have been putting the car into the manual mode when a need to slow down and using some help from the transmission to help slow me down. I don't rev it up too much and just use a little less brake. Am I asking for trouble or is this within the realm of normal responsible auto usage. Perhaps someone will say something like: Hey don't do that, the car was not made to use this type of braking on a regular basis. Hate to sound like a lazy guy but I am trying to keep three of these Beemers running and it keeps me hopping. Thanks to all the good hands on deck here.

+1 jclausen -- could be warped rotors or other front end problems -- don't mess with your safety.

Changing clutch much more expensive than changing brakes! Wouldn't do that.
