Nice! My car has about 4"+ on original shifter bushings, same trans. Have a uuc setup, heard good things about it... :-(
The UUC is a good idea but the way it was manufactured, it did not hold up. There was a small amount of slop between the sealed roller bearings at the bottom pivot and their bores in the shift lever when it was new (not a press fit - these should have been a press fit). The ability for the bearings to move in their bores quickly egged out the bores which became noticeable to the driver as increasing slop in the shifter. I degreased the bores and used Loctite sleeve retainer to bond the OD's of the bearings to the bores which eliminated the play (for now). Loctite sleeve retainer is some tough stuff so it may hold up for a while, but I don't expect this to be a permanent fix. The other problem is that the shifter itself is not the major source of in gear play - the swivel joint is. The UUC alone is probably not going to reduce your slop to what I would consider tolerable levels. I would describe the in-gear play and shift feel w/ the UUC with the stock single shear selector rod as 'awful'. It was worse than driving the most worn out manual transmission pickup truck I could ever imagine.

What about the uuc ddsr?
I think theirs only fits the late style aluminum shift carrier which is not what I have
Yep! Only for the 260/6 from what I found.
The solid bushings on the shifter plate to case helped quite a bit for me. Have you looked into those? They came from some joint in Australia, but I am sure you can fab some easy. I had a stainless braided hose made from the master to slave too. LJ has it on his car, ping him for a pic. Been years, but ran me $30 only. Cheap.

I need one of those stainless lines.

I have not looked into shifter plate bushings. The remainder of the in-gear slop on this unit is from a worn pin bore where the swivel joint pins to the transmission. I had previously sourced a slightly oversize pin from Fastenal and it cut down on the slop. I have thought about drilling the pin bore to slightly under 1/4 and reaming it to 1/4 and using a 1/4" pin to give me a fresh pin/bore fit but I'd need to find a way to fixture the transmission on my big drill press, or take it apart. I so hate this remote shifter setup.
I did some 745i parts car disassembly over the weekend
I'm saving all the doors and decklid and hood. I hope I'll never need them but finding rust free e23 sheet metal is not that easy if I do.
I'm going to send the Bilsteins off the 745i, which are only a few years old, out to be revalved to sports (I have a set of Dinan coils going on the 733). I'm also going to send the 745's steering gear out to be rebuilt and returned. The 745i got the same part # gear as a US e23 manual trans car. I'm guessing the 745i/e23 US manual cars have a firmer feel torsion bar than my 733iA

What is the best way to store hoods, trunk lids, doors to keep them from being warped? or dented?
The sheet metal on this car is pretty thick; these are not going to warp from what I can tell. Junkyards usually store doors vertically in racks that separate them from one another. Like so

My parts car doors came pre-dented so I'm not that worried about them.

Thanks Bondo! I'm envious of your shop. Wish I had that much space to work. very nice!
I took the rear subframe and trailing arms out of the 745 parts car tonight. I need these trailing arms because they have the rear sway bar mounts on them so I can install the sway bar out of this car on the 733
The trailing arms are pretty nasty rusty from a previous owner's salty winter driving. I think I'm just going to strip the scale and POR 15 them. The 733i is not a totally rust free show car for me to be sending parts out to powder coat.

Man that's a dream garage! BTW, while you are disassembling I could sure use a rear windshield gasket.
The rear gasket on this car is in good shape but it might have some paint overspray on the very edge - this car was a single stage crappy repaint at some point. I also don't know if I'm going to be able to get it out w/o damaging it. I tried to get the front gasket out a couple months ago, hoping you might be able to use it, and I broke the newer, good windshield (and then realized the previous "pro" glass install had filled the gasket with an inappropriate silicone sealant which rendered the gasket junk anyway). I hate gasket set windshields so much.

Appreciate it very much. A little overspray I can deal with. I would also be interested in the abs stuff. I’ll email you.

If you don't want to fool with cutting off the rear tow hook to move to the 733, BMW still has them available.
And while you have the subframe out, have it modified to be adjustable. Did that on mine and it took out a lot of negative camber which you get with running the M-parallels.
Also, have you thought of doing the vented rear brake upgrade from the 740i? I would highly recommend it!!

That is good to know about the tow hook - I will check that out. I did take a look at the hook on the donor 745 and saw what a mess it was welded on there so well and decided not to bother trying to cut it off. Do you have a part #? I looked on Realoem and couldn't find it.
I am already planning on modifying the rear subframe for toe and camber adjustment. When I lower the car the rear camber is going to be even more extreme. I am going to order one of the kits and do it myself.
I have given some thought to brakes on this car. I had heard about doing an e32 vented rear swap. I need to figure out what to do for fronts too. These cars are way underbraked for me. I have tried several pad formulations - I'm currently using ATE OE pads which are DOT FF friction -- and have a new brake bomb and lines and this car still feels like an underbraked old car even with the stock miserable 180 hp. When I used to drive the 745i I was also underwhelmed with the brakes. This thing is going to be dangerous when it has some real power. The front rotors are so small.

41 11 1 875 192 is the part number for the tow hook with the mounting tab to weld on.
Others are more knowledgeable on what braking options there are for our e23s, but i think a custom after-market kit for the front will be your only option unless you could custom make brackets for another bmw models setup to fit.
The rear 740i vented setup bolts right on. i put it on with stainless lines and it balances out the braking on this car.
I got the M106 torn the rest of the way down. The bearings looked good and the crank looks good. That is a relief because I need to use this crank and rods.
I am bringing the crank, rods, JE pistons & pins, locks, rod bearing and ring pack, crank trigger wheel, flywheel and clutch set in to the machine shop to have the rotating assembly balanced, and I am also dropping the M30B35 head off to have a valve job and to have it skimmed for MLS head gasket.
Bores on the M106 were junk junk junk, this engine did a lot of sitting years ago and it had really rusted up.

Steve, I know that BenGerman on mye28 has done some extensive homework on e23 calipers and rotors. http://www.mye28.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=146616

Thank you! Will check that out
I rebuilt the front end of the 733i tonight. For the steering gear, I sent the 745i parts car's steering gear out to Jorgen Automotive to be rebuilt and returned. They are an import steering gear and rack specialist who came recommended me by someone in the steering industry whose opinion I value. Jorgen's price was reasonable (under $300 including shipping) and their work appears to be highly detail oriented. There is no on center play that I can feel in the gear now with the car off on the rack. Before the rebuild you could feel some on center play. I will report back when I get to road test the car, hopefully tomorrow night. RealOEM shows that 745i and US market 735i manual trans cars had a different part # steering gear than US market automatic cars, so I wanted to make sure I was using the highest performing steering gear. I forgot to measure whether the torsion bar in the 745i gear was larger than the 733i auto one.
I also installed Dinan lowering coils and Bilstein HD struts tonight, as well as new control arms and idler arm bushing. The drag link and tie rod ends were newer pieces already on the car.
The steering coupler off my parts car was nice and tight so I used it on the 733. The one that came off the 733 had some play so I discarded it.
Here is a small video showing the amount of play I have in the steering w/ the Jorgen rebuilt gear in the car. This tiny amount of remaining play is in the steering column U joint inside the car - never going to be perfect. I am impressed an old steering gear is going to be this nice and tight.

I will rebuild the rear suspension tomorrow night. The goal is to drive this car to my parents' for Thanksgiving.

Kickass work, Steve!
Do not scrap that cat, some CA guys would love it. I sold one off my 735i for scrap weight plus freight, just helped another guy out.

The flanges behind the cat and front heat shields on the 733 are rusty and falling apart, I was planning on trashing this whole exhaust. This is a Northeast car and is not rust free.

Ah, I keep forgetting you are up there.
Any clue what scrap value is on those big 80s cats? I have a stack outside and am tired of looking at them.

Not sure. You have to have a scrap dealer's license to sell cats out here so I've never looked into it.
