Since we clearly need another oil thread...
What oil would you recommend for a 2001 S62 that's currently being run on BMW 10w60? I'm probably going to run the 10w60 from Liqui Moly. The price point is so much more tolerable than TWS.

If it's on 10W60 I'd keep it on 10W60, not 5W30 (even though BMW says you *can* use 5W30 on the 01+ S62's). Oil is oil for the most part, as long as it's the right weight and you change it at the right time I don't think you can really go wrong. Liqui Moly is a reputable brand so I'd use it with confidence. I run the Liqui Moly 5W40 in my 540it, seems to do the job just fine.

S62's need 10w60 and I really doubt any have been run since new on 5w30. More likely than not a lazy or unknowledgable service advisor forgot to put correct oil spec on the receipts. Dont run anything other than 10w60 in an S62
Liqui Moly, Castrol, whatever decent quality 10w60 you want to put in is ok. Liqui Moly is the cheapest of the bunch

Interesting read, not sure how 15 year old cars are impacted by engines oil requirements for 4 banger direct injected turbo applications. I think we all have recognized by now that earlier oil changes based on driver's foot and driving cycles (how long do you travel and how often? What is the ambient temp during those short drives? etc) is the best approach. Oil and filter changes are the cheapest maintenance an owner can do to extend engine life long term.
I run Mobil One 0W-40 (Euro Blend) in everything except the M5 then I use the tried and true Castrol Professional TWS 10W-60. The high dollar stuff made from elks blood, assorted dodo bird droppings and other rare earth by products. No Dinos were harmed in bottling that stuff!

Interesting, someone else. Took a full change interval, but similar results in my 525i. And while I've always had brand preferences, I really deep down thought they were all the same. Appears not. It may (or may not) just be the LL01 not the LL98. They make a 5-40 for each spec.

This is interesting...!!!
I too have been running Castrol 0w-40, because is only $25 / 5 quarts jug, and it is readily available at Walmart.
My car has been using more and more oil.
However, right after I do an engine flush, and replace the oil, the usage has stopped, until about 3k miles, then it starts using like crazy...

I'm just gonna start using BMW labled oil. FCPEuro will ship it to my door with a filter. No more trying to figure out the "best" oil. Mostly I don't care anyway...
BTW, no I'm not gonna warranty the used oil.
FWIW, for the last 5 years I've been using Mobil 0W40. Not sure what the origonal owners used but I have receipts from the day it was new and they always had it dealer serviced. So...it's probably had BMW oil most of it's life.

Late to the party on this one, but yeah!?? Nate goes M5! Nice!
I'm changin 540 oil today or tomorrow, going w/ LM 0W40 Synthoil...
ECS has decent price on LM, and it comes in 5Q (ok prob 5L) bottles which is GREAT vs the PZ Syn Euro I was using that was only in quarts, and now is NOT easily available for less than $10/qt which is kinda ridiculous...
Just googled and there's an Amazon seller selling it too for reasonable price w/ free shipping (only a dollar or two better than my ECS order tho and w/ ECS got some other stuff in the same package...)
I know thats not the 10W60 being discussed, haven't yet done my 10W60 replacement shopping as I've been working off a big bulk case of TWS for the S54 for a while, but its just about time for that too...

In mid September I bought two 5 quart jugs of Castrol Edge 0w40 for $22.67 each from Amazon. That same container of oil is now $36.65 per 5 quart jug. Wow, a 60% increase in price. At that price point I might give LubroMoly a try. Or maybe even Rotella T6. What are the drawbacks to using an oil formulated for diesel engines in a gasoline engine?

Yeah there's something about it not being LL-01 anymore. However, I don't think it *really* matters unless you're running your oil for 10k miles (which you shouldn't either way). I ran Mobil 1 0W40 with 6k-7k intervals for something like 40k miles with no issues. As long as it's decent synthetic oil that's changed regularly, I don't think you can really go wrong. Especially on a car that's daily driven and not raced/abused regularly. People like to overthink this stuff but ultimately it doesn't matter. The oil debates have been largely debunked by the folks over at Blackstone Labs.
