We have a 2000 325i that I picked up for my son. There is a noise coming from the engine. Anyone know where to start?

That square box thing on the intake manifold is the disa valve they do come apart pull that and check it. Also after removing it you could block off the hole and run the engine to see if it went away. Otherwise I would remove the engine belt and run it to see if the noise goes away
I unplugged the disa valve and it is still making the noise. Is there another disa valve under the manifold?
No, that’s the only DISA valve. Use a cardboard tube from a roll of paper towels to focus your hearing. Also, Witt the engine cold, remove the main serpentine belt and start the engine to see if the noise stops. Don’t run the engine for more than 30 seconds.

I narrowed it down to the alternator. After removing the airbox I was able to put a screwdriver on the alternator and listen to it. I took the belt off and the noise went away. After looking further and spinning the alternator wheel it didn’t make any noise. But the tensioner pulley seemed loose and was making noise. Could I possibly have been hearing the tensioner pulley while listening to the alternator?
Also, throughout this process I also took out the DIsa valve. It does not function properly. The flapper is good but it just does not stay closed if I hold the vacuum all. Would a rebuild help this?

It would seem the problem is the tensioner pulley.
Disa would have to be replaced, as it seems the diaphragm has failed.
