    Electric Problem, steering wheel, seats, mirrors

    Hello,

    I have E39 530iA 2002. All of a sudden, my electric adjustment of the steering wheel, my drivers seat electric adjustment, the memory related to it stopped working, I guess it's all connected somehow. Does anyone have a clue?

    As well my right mirror is not folding and sometimes it goes down in reverse and sometimes not, however, it can be adjusted, anyone?

    Thank you!

    WRT your mirror, just move the switch for the mirror adjustment to the other position. IIRC you currently have it in the position that allows you to adjust the driver side mirror. Switch it to the passenger side and the auto drop when in reverse should stop.

    Hopefully somebody else will chime in with input to your other issues.

    Bad ignition switch or water under the front carpet on the pass side which has corroded the fuse block.
    Has you pass side carpet ever been wet?

    ^^ that if you have any other electrical symptoms.

    But also:

    Every one of those functions is related to the drivers side seat controller. The brains for that are in the seat switch itself, oddly enough. So its the thing thats down below the left thigh bolster. If the seat connector that is located approximately under your buttwhole is loose or contaminated or whatever, that'd be an optimistic easy fix.

    OK except maybe the mirror dipping. It might be that same thing (because the mirror positions are recorded and reset by the master seat module), but, also the motor for that can die. And as said above, the reverse dip only happens w/ the control switch in one position - can't tell you which off top of my head because BMW made it different for my 2002 540i and 2003 M3 and I'll be damned if I can remember which is "left" and which is "right" for "on" or "off" so I just have to trial and error it every time...But if its not folding either, then maybe the motors are dying. If the mirror itself is really crapping out, have an elaborate thread on how to get donor motors from other makes of cars to rehab one instead of buying new ones but its complicated and a bit of work (or its easy but $$$ to buy dealer parts)... SO I'd confirm that the mirror is really dying first.

    Ditto Gear Grinder...my first thought was to check your driver's seat control module. And if the plastic base around the driver's seat has broken away in the front or rear and is hanging...then you definitely need to check to see if the large wiring harness to the PM-SM (power module-seat module) is intact and not slipping out which will cause the affects that are listed in the original post:

    {passenger mirror tilt feature when REVERSE is selected can be deactivated based on position of switch}

    {this diagram shows what all the driver's seat module controls}

    {this is what the PM-SM wiring harness and module should look like if it is still INTACT}

    {this is what can happen to the PM-SM when the base of the seat breaks loose}

    {this is what can happen to the wiring harness when the base of the seat breaks loose...the little white locking tab gets broken off and allows the harness to slip out}

    And at my local 'yard the vultures tear apart perfectly good seats to get those modules out, in the process smashing up the side trim and sometimes forking up the seat upholstery even! I am betting 1/2 the time they screw the part up they are trying to get at the same time and break the connector like that... Then they still probably flog it on CL or eBay...

    ...you deserve the pat-on-the-back because you undoubtedly mentioned it first...

    And thanks to the OP for posting a follow up that the issue was resolved.
