I’m struggling to make a decision and would appreciate opinions:
Would you trade a sorted 1999 M3 convertible 5spd with only 54k miles straight across for a 1975 911 project car? The 911 is running/driving and rust free, but is the less desirable 2.7 engine and is far from a purists car after being converted from targa to cabriolet and wide-bodied (fiberglass). I have always hoped to end up with a 911SC as my weekend toy but this project car would get me into a air cooled 911 ahead of schedule. Would you trade now or enjoy the M3 for a couple more years and then look to spend some money to trade up to a 911SC?

Not sure what the M3 is worth but to me its worth more than a bastardized 911.( I have an 86 3.2 Carrera)
Paint looks nice but it looks like the Whale Tail is not correct for the year and even worse it doesn't have the front air dam for aero balance.
Clean air cooled 911s are getting expensive so you might consider selling the M3 now and going on the hunt for a clean air cooled 911
Thanks Gerry. That’s exactly the kind of insight I am looking for. I am mostly considering the trade because I fear the air cooled 911 market is running away from me and I’m not in a position right now to get into the m491 I really want.

I agree that 911 looks like the owner is desperate for attention. But I’d rather have a 911 than an M3. Neither would be convertible since they are lower performance. I have a 99M3 and 08M3, and hope to buy a 991TT.
M3 can be sought out pretty easily. But a 911 that your going to lend your taste your flavor to because it needs it. That’s rare. Usually you get a Porsche and you don’t really want to do too much to it aside from performance, but one that needs all the love, I’d do it.

I’ve owned 3 Carrera and 3 M3s. PM me and we can chat on the phone tonight.

Don't confuse cabriolet with roadster. That clearly does not have a retractable roof and therefore is NOT a cabriolet. The very definition of cabriolet is that it has a top which can be retracted for inclement weather.
Sorry OP, but I cant let this go as a passionate Porsche owner.
If you're buying the 911 as a potential investment you have to discount the amount to correct the "improvements" the owner.
Toss the fiberglass kit and get new fenders installed and the body completely stripped and repainted in a Porsche color. the bling "Whale tale" has to go, Real Porsche wheels( $2k+).
2.7 911s are not the primes years even if the Mag case issues have been addressed.
Targa to convertible? are you kidding me? Any future buyers will consider this a parts car.
If I were the owner of this thing I'd jump on your M3 so fast your head would spin.
Thanks everyone...your insights and opinions are greatly appreciated.
After another night sleeping on it and a drive in the M3 this morning, I’m going to keep the M3 and hold out for a well sorted 911SC.

Good call. Project Porsche’s are back breakingly expensive. Hold out for a sorted one. But do get one, they are wonderful no matter what year you buy.
