How is the x-pipe coming along and are there any news about it?

Nothing much - my mechanic has his hands full and I've been enjoying driving the car will probably pick this up again early 2019.

    In reply to “Rodneyngo”.

SuperSprint stainless steel 850i X-pipe. Not cheap ($670), but it’s a direct bolt on.

The Eisenmann race exhaust fitted with the factory resonator sounded better than the replaced Remus exhausts. Little bit more rumble at idle than it really comes alive at the higher rpms (3k+). Still it was more tamed than I would’ve liked, hence, the fitment of the SuperSprint X-pipe. Now with the SuperSprint pipes, the deeper rumble and burble (not obnoxiously so) at idle is very satisfying sounding. At mid to wide opened throttle, the dual exhausts emit a high pitch wail that just screams and it’s just music to the ears. There is a slight drone at and only at about 1k rpm, which I’ve learned to live with, otherwise, there is no drone at highway speed. Very satisfied with the Eisenmann and SuperSprint combo.

Also interested in hearing what this sounds like. I'm considering going with the Eisenmann Race Exhaust but am quite worried about it being too loud or obnoxious for driving around in traffic. It is livable, especially with an x-pipe in place of the resonator?

There are several youtube videos of 850i's with different exhaust systems. I have 2.5" exhaust system with custom-made x-pipe, 18" resonators, and magnaflow mufflers but it definitely drones at low speed and low rpm up to 2000 rpm. Once I am up to 30+mph it becomes quiet even at highway speeds, but when you drop it into 'S' mode and get the rpms up to 4000+ it really sounds good with a strong howl but its not disturbing at all.

I've being trying to get a decent sound from my 840ci, so far without much luck.
I started with completely stock exhaust system which is a waste of a nice V8 when it's so quiet. First fitted a pair of magnaflow rear mufflers as they are cheap. It gave the car an exhaust sound, but It was just sound, no v8 and introduced the annoying cabin drone from 1000 to 2000 rpm.

Later when i could afford it, i swapped the magnaflows for an eisenmann sports exhaust. Sounds nicer, but still no trace of a V8 in there and the cabin drone was still there.
Next I fitted a custom X-pipe which really made a difference, nice throaty V8 with decent sound at higher rpm's as well, It's fairly loud, but the cabin drone is unbearable.
My next plan is to fit a set of eisenmann silencer inserts to see if it will bring the volume down to a more usable level. (If I can find somewhere that can fit them)

Has anyone actually tried fitting the inserts and do they make much difference? And failing that, has anyone tried stock mufflers with an X-pipe fitted on an 840ci?
Most of the info here is really based on the V12 and unfortunately I live in Ireland, so no where to drop the car in for proper custom exhaust work.
Any other suggestions would be welcome before I give up and revert it all back to stock.

I've had a few versions of exhaust fitted on my two 840ci's - and the key is decent back boxes - the sound is all about those boxes, and performance comes from cats and an X crossover. The problem is you have already removed the resonator (which also serves as a cross-over between banks) - and that reduces resonance significantly, and reduces the amount of sound produced.

As you have got to this point I think I would have a go at re-fitting the back boxes and seeing how it sounds - as any 'performance' rear boxes are not going to reduce the sound levels that much. Hopefully they will also remove that resonance to a much lower RPM.

The best pure sound I achieved with no resonance at all was with a completely stock system apart from Longlife rear boxes:

When I got my second 840ci I went back to Longlife and had the same rear boxes fitted - and the resonator removed plus an X pipe fabricated - and it was lovely at tick-over but quite loud when giving it some welly - but quite acceptable apart from at full throttle. Later I had the cats replaced with 200-cell versions and it got a lot louder! A bit like a nail-gun, you can hear every cylinder firing when you put your foot down. Still, it sounds perfect with all the windows up!

"The best pure sound I achieved with no resonance at all was with a completely stock system apart from Longlife rear boxes:"

cheers for the reply, Up till last week the exhaust was completely stock except for the rear boxes which are eisenmann's sports . But still had bad cabin drone with the stock cats and resonator and i've being trying to get rid of the drone ever since. In theory, it should sound it's best with all stock and just the eisenmann rear boxes which most would consider among the best? But didn't on my 840? I had the exhaust checked a number of times by different companies and they all found no issues. Even the resonator looked good internally when it was removed last week.

At this point, I think I'll have to revert it back to stock, starting with the rear boxes, and then a new resonator if there is still a drone.

Mine actually sounds very like your second video when it's pushed, but the low end drone between 1000 to 2000rpms which is motorway and main road cruising is driving me nuts on my daily commute.

@tepescovir see my posts above.y mechanic does a lot of R&D work on exotics and in particular exhaust systems. We're in the process of developing a system for the 840Ci to achieve that high frequency sound.

I've been following the thread, as well as others. I care more about the low end sound and getting rid of the cabin drone, but I'm still interested and hope it will work as a solution for me when it becomes available for sale. But for the moment, i'll have to back to stock so the car is driveable as it's my daily and only car.

Lack of cabin drone is also one of the prerequisites. But if you want the deep rumble, then yes, back boxes will be the main solution.
I want to achieve a different pitch.

No, it's been a lovely day today!

As the drone started when you fitted the rear boxes then that is the cause of it - and I'm not sure changing the rest of the exhaust will make a blind bit of difference. Unfortunately there is no visible part number on the Longlife back boxes, but have a word with them and explain your problem and I'm sure they will sort you out - but with the loss of the resonator it is always going to be quite loud....

I have a custom-built 2.5" stainless exhaust on my 850 but it does have the low rpm drone. Custom-made X-pipe, 18" resonators, and Magnaflow cans. Car is actually pretty quiet at speed until you drop it into 'S' mode and run the rpms up to 4K+ then it starts to growl and sounds damn good.
