    Exhaust Systems

Are there any exhaust systems for the E31 or do you have to get it custom built?

I am just trying to find something that screams in the high RPMs but is subtle in the lower ranges.

I switched from Remus to Supersprint. Its deep and throaty but no scream.
Remus was to muted and aesthetically, I couldn't get used to the sideways looking pipes

Custom Pipes with MAGNAFLOW cans - less than $500 will get you what you need.

Do you have any exhaust videos? I cant seem to find any supersprint exhaust videos for the 850i. What do you think about eisenmann?

I'm in the process of working with my mechanic/workshop to develop a bolt-on stainless steel exhaust solution for the E31, even with shipping it should be affordable (at least definitely more affordable than Supersprint/Eisenmann options!).
My wishlist is for it to be a high-pitched sound, like the more exotic Maserati V8.

How much do you think it will cost if you were to sell? Since you have a v8, the sound won’t be the same as a v12.

Not sure yet but the aim is to be under $1000. And yes, we're aware of the V8 vs V12 difference, the plan is to use 2.25" on the V8 and 2.5" on the V12 with a tuned X-pipe.

That's what we did , just before the SC install. Headers and down pipes are still oem… at the flanges we went with just a bit bigger bends ( that could be welded on those flanges ) and after those again bigger all the way.

sorry , we did not dyno before the exhaust build. With the custom exhaust we had 286 HP / 420 NM . That with a ( manual ) '90 , 140K kilometers. But that doesn't say much , as afterwards , during SC install , we suspected bad ignition , so complete new now , and more... a "bad" ECU , as we had now recently improvement with "new" ECU's . Not bad i think , here at the dyno they never have seen a oem 850i above 300 HP.
After that pic we put extra cans between the X piece and rear ones with some cutouts of the damper material to clear the differential.
When on the lift i can take a pic.
Sorry , have no video for the sound.... but for me it's nice , not to loud , despite all flow trough cans.

If your wife thinks it is too loud, you are on the right path.

    Hi Barry,

Could you give an estimate of cost for your custom pipes? We're looking to get some other exhaust, but the prices I've heard up till now (in NL) are through the roof.

Since you name your pics "uitlaat" I think you're not so far away from the Netherlands

    Cheers!

Hi Ohnizz, yes, i'm flemish , near Ghent.
I didn't calculate the total cost but wasn't that expensive.... i bought all items at Biesheuvel , who i know from years when i build my '70 2800 CS rally car .
Here you have all items and price…. depending the diameter you want to go.
    https://www.biesheuvel.nl/automotive...eel-staal.html

And of course a lot of welds to do ….. but i have a friend "welder" .Count sure a full day welding , yourself cutting and measuring…. best on a lift , wouldn't do it on the ground.

here you can see we added extra cans to our first setup as pic above. I didn't wanted it to be to loud, you want a normal conversation in the car , radio etc... loud is sporty , but get's annoying very rapidly. You also see the little welded cut out to clear the differential.
Extra O2 sensors are for the dual Lambda gauge in the car as we must map the right A/F now with the SC and bigger injectors .
We went bigger diameter as 0.5 bar boost gives 1.5 times as much exhaust gasses ….to keep back pressure low.

If you haven't bought something by Christmas check ECS Tuning (no affiliation) for their "Black Friday" sale. Last year all Super Sprint was 50% off....that's when I bought mine.

    Will do.
We have Australia's first 8-fest next week so I'll be getting my car back for that - exhaust will probably not be finalised by then, but will get an idea of how it sounds before adjustment/tuning.

My mechanic is planning on making one to bolt on to the stock headers and exhaust section. That's the plan.

    In for more info.

My E31 came with Magnaflow cans. But horrible exhaust tips. It gargles nicely, but me being the person I am, I want it a bit louder. So far eisenmann exhaust (race version) peaked my interest but its close to $2,000 USD just for 2 mufflers pretty much. I also was told about a good exhaust shop not to far from where I live, so now im currently trying to piece a custom exhaust together. Not sure what mufflers to go with. I originally thought about leaving the magnaflow boxes but adding electronic cut outs so I can control the exhaust with remote if i wanted to.

I am thinking about doing a cat delete and maybe just maybe getting those headers from supersprint for my M70. I gotta figure out if a supercharger will be worth it as I got a 1991 850i auto (i hear the 4 speeds can handle a good amount of power) and go from there. But before then Im gonna have to scoop some Wokee chips.

I just checked out my exhaust system last weekend and discovered that I also have maganflow cans. Its welded on with the stock exhaust tips. If I were to get eisenmann or any of the other exhaust systems would i have to cut off the maganas and weld on new flanges?
