Hi, new to the forum and to BMW. I am a car guy, not to brand conscious though, I like em all and have owned a lot of cars. Never owned a BMW though.
Anyway I am looking for a car for my 16YO son. Rules are no sports cars or 2-doors, it has to be 2000 or newer and it has to cost below $4000.
We found a 2002 745i with 100k miles for $2000. The car is awesome, the interior looks like it has 30k miles, not 100k. The paint is great too. What problems should I look for before buying this car?
I understand when you buy a car like this and something breaks it could be a $10k repair (or more) and there is a chance something will break even if the car is perfect when you buy it. At $2000 it is essentially a throw away though, so I am not worried about something going bad down the road, but I do want to do what I can to make sure nothing is wrong with it now.
Any advice on what to look for? Is there a buyers guide out there?
Hello.
When I started my search for my 2004 760li, I first found a shop that was knowledgeable of 7 series. I did take my 760LI to the dealer to inspect it that was the last time they saw my 760LI. They did download work that was done to the BMW. I have have enjoyed my BMW since I had it. Keep asking questions on this forum and bimmerfest someone will respond.

It's the first year of the 745 I would never recommend the first year of any BMW. BMW has 7 year product cycle, get some thing near the end
The experienced BMW mechanics I have talked with say "don't look, run away FAST" from a 2002 745i. One of the BMW Master Technicians on this very board told me "I wouldn't wish a BMW 745i on my worst enemy". There is a reason the car is $2000, nobody wants the 745i. That said, if your son only drive a few miles to school and back and is a genius with his own metric tools who enjoys fixing a lemon in his spare time with BMW junkyard parts, maybe it makes sense...
