    E46 wagon misfire / stalling

Hi all. Greetings from New Zealand.
New here and need some help. I'm at my wits end with my wife's car. It's a 2002 E46 325i touring, auto. Started misfiring a while ago but cylinders that were misfiring seemed to "jump around". I've replaced coils, plugs, air flow meter, fuel pump & filter. It seemed to be going pretty well but the engine lamp came on again. I was advised that the O2 sensors give issues so I replaced all four. The car started and ran like a dream. Next day we took it to a friend to have him clear the codes and reset the light. The day after that the car started misfiring worse than before and is cutting out / stalling. Further advice says it may be a problem with inlet cam position sensor so I've ordered one.
What do you think guys? This has me well & truly stumped...

    Many thanks in advance.
    Darin

Do a smoke test to find vacuum leaks and intake boot leaks/cracks. If your car runs rough at idle but otherwise ok you probably have vacuum leaks. Common issue that every e46 will have due to age.

Scan for codes before throwing parts at it.

Don't start by replacing parts without knowing the cause of the fault,
as most codes indicate that a sensor has detected a fault, not that the sensor should be replaced!

As said above-scan for codes, take note of them, then post them here for us to analyze,
as they provide the clues to a correct diagnosis.

Based on the symptoms you describe-random misfires, not specific to a cylinder or bank,
I suspect either an intake leak or insufficient fuel pressure.

Common intake leak locations are the rubber intake boots along with associated hoses, as they become brittle and crack with age.
If you remove and squeeze them, unseen and hard to find cracks will be easily noticed.

A fuel pressure test can be performed at the fuel rail Schrader Valve with a fuel pressure gauge.
Fuel pressure(psi) should be 50psi. Test for readings at: idle-1500-2500-3500 rpms.
