2000 M5 Adjusting coil overs to raise height

All, I have a 2000 M5 that I recently purchased with coil over suspension. The kit looks to be a ground control kit as shown here: https://groundcontrolstore.com/colle...e-coilover-kit

The car sits too low and would scrape at every bump on the road. I'm trying to figure out how to adjust. I bought a universal hook wrench by OTC but it does not look right. Can anyone give me recommendation. Both the front and the rear really need to come up an inch.

    Many thanks

Loosen the set screw in the bottom perch and turn counter clockwise to lift the perch.

Counter clockwise as in to the right? I assumed that would lower the collar and reduce the ride height.

On mine it rises the spring up. Easiest way would be to raise the corner you are working on, loosen the gold perch, and turn it.
On my car, clockwise lowers the height on the threads and lowers the car. To the right rises it. Just be carefull you don't go too much towars the end of the threaded body.

Looking at the pic, doesn't look like you have much room to go up.... maybe 1/2 inch.

Yep, that's what I'm concerned about. It seem like either the strut or the springs are too short. Not sure exactly what to do here.

I think that's how its supposed to be. Could be the owner bought big-drop springs for it too, but I'm more inclined to say its the latter. Still... a full 1/2" is more than it sounds like, so... raise 'em up and see what you think...

    See what GC says here:
    https://groundcontrolstore.com/produ...l-spanner-tool

I think probably you adjust those by hand (both sides in air) as they describe... I think thats why they recess that groove, to prevent you from using a wrench when you aren't supposed to...

If you like your spring rate, you can buy coilover springs of the same rate but with a longer free length. If you want the car 1" higher, order springs something like 2" longer than what you have. This will put the car 1" higher, plus get the adjusters off the top of the threaded portion so you can still go up or down as you need to.

Coilover springs are specified by inside diameter, free length, and rate. GC often uses their own springs, but you can usually find a part number stamped on it that you can Google to find the rate specs. You can measure ID and free length.

Summit has a great selection of springs, and it's easy to narrow down your search by ID, rate, and length.

Just get 2 rings machined to slide over the bottom of the struts. When you slide the strut into the wheel carrier it will lift the strut/coil over up which will raise the front of the car.
I did that for my car so I wouldn't hit every speed bump I drove over.

Thanks all. I spoke to Ground Effects and they suggested taller springs. I'll pull the wheels off this weekend and see what the numbers are on the coil spring. They should be able to use those to provide taller springs with the same ratings.

    Thanks

It looks like a lowered BMW. Nothing amazing in my mind.

That angle makes it kind of hard to get a sense of where the wheel lands in the wheelwell.

Maybe this one is better. Looks like the rear is worse than the front. The fender is rolled.

    Looks great as is...
I wouldn't mess with the height at all.
I would check with Ground Control if you even can raise the car with these struts and shocks.

It's tearing up the under shield just going down the road. I think the back is a little too low so it's scraping the muffler or cats. I'm not too fond of lowered cars. I had an old Opel Manta GTE as a kid when I first started driving and while it looked great. It was a nightmare to drive around.

    Really ?
My car is lower, and it doesn't tear up any skid panels.
Just as long as you don't go 4-wheeling, lol.
    I need a well-priced M5 ...!!!

    1. agree - unless your driveway is ALL potholes and speedbumps - something else sounds wrong with this car, but...
    2. it is true the over-hangs on these cars can contact on uneven surfaces can make them seem lower than they are. the V8 undertray hangs a little low across the middle too.
    3. just drive the vintage silver XJ in the back of that first picture instead. that thing should have good clearance.

Haha. I think all four tires are 275/37/18. Normally it's a staggered setup; 245/40/18 up front and 275/35/18 out back.
