I am helping my son who just started college. He has been a long time BMW fan and although would prefer an earlier model thought the e-36 would be a good starter car as far as availability and cost of parts. That brings us to last week when he found a 318is with unknown miles. Runs great, body is straight with no rust but has a transmission problem that from my research may be low fluid. Slipped when I tried to back up a steep driveway and after breaking but fine down the highway.I plan to get it on the lift and do a fluid and filter change next week.
Wanted to add that he won't be needing it until next year.
The next day he found a 97 740i with a 4.4, runs and drives great but is very rough inside and out. The last owner done the regular services and noticed the water pump leaking and didn't want to spend any more on it. When I went to look at the car I saw DINAN 7 badge on the trunk new to BMW's I had no idea what it was.My son contacted Dinan and they said it was upgraded and badged by them in 2001.This car is incredibly fast at about 30 mph I stepped on the throttle and it left a little rubber before it launched.
We payed only $300.00 each.
The plan for now is to get the 318 freshened up mechanically and cosmetically and down the road possibly swap in the m-62.
