im looking into buying an 1984 e28 533i. im 17 so I don't want to jump into a car that will constantly break down on me.
In general, the newer the car is, sensors and electronics increase. E28's are a piece of cake compared to E34's. E34's have less than E39's; but with the advent of on board diagnostics, the E39's and newer have more troubleshooting information available.
There is enough information on the Internet to completely cover any diagnostic on an E28, and a bidirectional scan tool and expensive scopes are not needed. In my opinion it is easier to keep an E28 running with much less expense than any newer model.

My 16yr old son has owned 3 80's BMW's. They are very simple set up. Kind of different on timing settings and very touchy when it comes to vacuum leaks. They have style. Many kids have Japanese cars. Old euro stuff has a level of style.
