hi. i had this camshaft aside for a nv head that i was preparing, but i found some rust and after brushing it, i found this damage! is it to be thrown away?photo_2018-10-11_22-50-15.jpgphoto_2018-10-11_22-50-21.jpg
It looks screwed, how deep is the damage? Can it be polished off with Scotchbrite?
“It feels like about $500 for new cams”
it really lacks the material. touching it with the fingernail i feel it is dug. i can try to polish it, but will it continue to crumble?
If a flake is missing from the surface that is the hardened layer. The outer layer will keep breaking up, it will destroy the lifter and metal contaminate the engine causing more damage elsewhere.
thank you. it's time to start thinking about cat cams
Check with a cam shop. It may be possible to weld material, profile it and retreat but at that $$ point you may be better off with new cams . Fwiw i coat them with assembly lube then wrap with wax paper and plastic for storage . rust is the devil

They would also need to have or make a master of the lobe in order to regrind it. Ideally they would probably need to regrind the whole lobe, not just the nose. Its not as easy as it sounds. Buy a new one.
thank you guys, but i decided to throw it. i don't want to risk
