It looks screwed, how deep is the damage? Can it be polished off with Scotchbrite?

I can’t tell what it is. Can you describe what it feels like?

it really lacks the material. touching it with the fingernail i feel it is dug. i can try to polish it, but will it continue to crumble?

If a flake is missing from the surface that is the hardened layer. The outer layer will keep breaking up, it will destroy the lifter and metal contaminate the engine causing more damage elsewhere.

Check with a cam shop. It may be possible to weld material, profile it and retreat but at that $$ point you may be better off with new cams . Fwiw i coat them with assembly lube then wrap with wax paper and plastic for storage . rust is the devil

Would have to be re-nitrided or hardened . A cam shop can fix but depending on $$

They would also need to have or make a master of the lobe in order to regrind it. Ideally they would probably need to regrind the whole lobe, not just the nose. Its not as easy as it sounds. Buy a new one.
