Great mention of my work by the car Enthusiast world - Future of Bring a Trailer.

Looks like my CSi film(s) has/have made an impact on the buyer/seller Auction world. Turtle Garage. Future of Bring A Trailer and how presentations are suppose to be done.

    Happy moment. 😁

Is BaT open only to North America, or can foreign-based sellers list on there? (I think you'll know where I'm coming from Alec!)

Kiwi. You can list international cars too. A friend of mine whom I’m helping list a CSi is in Holland and they accept intl submissions now.

Thanks Alec...thinking it might be worth submitting my CSi for listing on there, but then again, there’s probably not much interest in RHD cars among the majority of BaT bidders.
On the other hand I think there would certainly be BaT buyers interested in bidding on Euro-sourced LHD cars.

And to prove my above theory correct:
I recently submitted my CSi to BaT for auction, which was rejected this week as being an unsuitable candidate.
Primarily I think because it is RHD.

Really? Wow. Wouldn’t they think they’d have buyers in “RHD countries”? I know BaT is a USA client based company but still, there are many international clients as well.

Yes, I thought I may have had an outside chance of it being accepted, but they basically said that given the car is RHD with a limited buyer base, my reserve price may not achievable.
Interestingly, they gave me no option to discuss further or to consider lowering my stated reserve - which is already too low for this car.

Same thing happened to me last month, trying to list my father's 1960 Jaguar MK.II 2.4 which originally was sold in South Africa (RHD car). They didn't think our reserve of $14k was realistic for the US market, even though our car has tons of rare early features. Ran into the same dilemma a few months earlier with the '99 M3 I'm trying to sell. They said my reserve was too high for my 89k mile coupe because the engine wasnt original to the car. Seems like they're getting more and more picky and doing everything they can to avoid RNM situations.

I tried to list mh 1989 635CSi, in great condition, with BaT and they just said "no"...no explanation. I won't use them again.

Kiwi -- I actually think your car being denied by BaT had more to do with it being located in New Zealand than it being right hand drive. Prospective bidders will have to budget a pretty good amount to ship the car from your country, and many won't even bother doing the homework to get a shipping quote because they'll just assume it's cost prohibitive and won't even bid. Then there's the 5% buyers premium they'll have to cover. It all starts to add up.

I can't imagine BaT is very popular in New Zealand, so the chance of a local sale is probably pretty low. As someone who sold a car on BaT, there is quite a bit of behind the scenes work that goes into the listing. BaT still has to pay their folks (even when cars don't sell), so they generally only entertain cars that have a high likelihood of selling or ones that gain them a lot of publicity (reference the recent RNM for the LaFerrari). I really think this was a business decision for them.

I'll add the current lead auction on BaT is a 1973 BMW E9 (3.0CS). It looks like a pretty descent car, but it's located in Hawaii. Even though it's a US car, the extra cost of shipping it across the Pacific plus it being harder and more costly for bidders to physically inspect the car may result in a lower sales price.

    Thanks for the insight, Sean.

I'm inclined to agree with you in many respects....could be more of a business decision for BaT.

However I don't think they (or many buyers for that matter) are aware of the relatively low cost of shipping - e.g. $US2,265 shipped from NZ to London (UK) in a dedicated 20ft container.
As such, my reserve price (as submitted to BaT) would have included the cost of shipping.
