I have been checking around for a socket to remove the oil filter canister cap on a 2000 z3 convertible. I think it is an 86mm but I can never get any clear info on this. As a matter of fact it seems any info I need on this vehicle never seems to be correct, always seem to get different answers and nothing consistent. If someone knows FOR SURE I would appreciate it. Thanks, Chuter
I think you will need to tell us which engine you have before anyone can answer your question "FOR SURE".

I'm sorry, It is 2.5. I believe m52 engine. Thanks Chuter
That gets him this far:
https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sel...es=Z3&body=Roa
It does not tell him what engine he has.
To tell his engine, he should put the last 7 characters into:

BMW MOA 696, BMW CCA 1405
I thought all the oil filter cap nuts were 36mm.
I got this one:

Works on my M Roadster and 2.8 Z3. If you scroll down to the cars it fits, "All" is listed under BMW.

Sorry. Mine was a 99 2.5 and it used a 36mm.
The canister has a nut at the top, it is 36mm. It also has flat spots lower on the cap. I wanted a socket that would fit these flats. I tried to measure the diameter o f the cap from flat to flat but my digital calipers decided to stop working. Am I looking for the wrong thing? Thanks, Chuter
I know that it is a 2.5. Is that not an m52? , Chuter
I just ran my VIN# on realoem- reveals all that info!
Soooooooo. What wrench do I need to remove the cap. I want to use the lower flats on the cap, not the 36mm nut. Chuter
Ok khammack, Now do you see what I mean by getting info that I cannot use? All I wanted was a wrench and after 6 hours I'm right where I started. Hope this comment doesn't pi$$ anyone off. It's all good. Thank You all, Chuter
That's because the proper thing to do is use the 36mm

I think you may be correct. I think I may be asking for something that does not exist. I will do as you say but at some point in time I will find what I need. Thank You all, Chuter
Ahh. I see what after now. Yes use the 36mm nut. My 2010 X3 doesn't have a nut on the 3.0 and takes a filter cap socket like you're referencing but I'm not sure what size you'd need since I never removed it that way on the Z3
Thank you for understanding what I am looking for. Chuter
You want a 36mm. The M54B25 oil cap has flats at the top for a 36mm hex socket for service and flats around the base for either aesthetics or factory assembly. Some other BMW models do have caps that use the very large lower flats for removal, but they do no have the upper 36mm hex. The tools made for the lower flats will not work for you as they do not clear the added height of the upper hex. Just use the 36mm.
A big ass metric crescent wrench should work!
36MM and be done with it!
