    Help with DTC's

I just scanned my car with PA Soft and came back with this. Do my O2 sensors definitely need to be replaced?

    Two Z3 Roadsters
Look at the description. Check your wiring for damage before thinking about replacing the sensors.

There is only one thing more pleasurable than working on a Z3, that's driving it top down on a fine day.

Faults not currently present. I would clear them and forget about it unless that CEL comes on.

I did and it comes back after 10-15 miles.

Sounds like a wiring issue then. The leads for the oxygen sensors are very long, especially the post cat sensors. Lots of wire susceptible to damage. I would look for wires contacting the exhaust, melting and shorting that way.

Codes 227 and 228 are rich mixture. Most likely cause is bad maf. Excessive fuel pressure is less likely but possible. Exhaust temperature sensors (egt) are not used on USA cars. I believe some euro cars had them. There is actually a light in the cluster for exhaust temp warning that is not used here either. You can see it with a flashlight. Ignore the egt sensor faults. Your issue is probably the maf.

I just replaced the fuel pump on the car last week. I'm going to clean the MAF tomorrow before I try anything else. Thanks!

I recorded these values driving around my neighborhood. My research tells me the MAF value is way off.

Does that self test error come back every time too?

That's a code that can indicate dme failure or possibly someone messed with the flash.

MAF Value isn't terrible, seems to be doing the right thing.

Not sure where 227&228 came from above.. there are no 227&228 errors in screenshot.

When I clear the codes, the yellow codes come back immediately. The red faults take 10-15 miles to reappear.

So then if the ECU internal error comes back constantly, you need another DME. It is failing an internal check. I wouldn't bother changing any other sensors until that part is resolved.
I can help with a dme swap, if needed. It's not terrible if you know how.

I've replaced the ECU in the E36's before. If its a similar job it shouldn't be too much of a hassle. The thing is, if it weren't for the CEL being illuminated, I wouldn't know anything was off with the car. The performance hasn't changed and gas mileage is as good as it ever was. Would you still replace the ECU if this were the case with your vehicle? I'm seeing E46 DME's on ebay for well under $100 but who knows if they're functional. Would I have to take it to the dealer to get it coded to my vehicle or is that something I can do with the PA Soft 1.4?

A used E46 dme has to be virginized before it can be synced to the ews. It is not in any way as simple as e36 at all. It uses a static ews code as well as a rolling code. Not a PASoft job.

You can find them under $50 sometimes, but there's a process to get it working with your ews system. All the ones I've ever bought (20+) were fine.
