Those last 2 pics look like something from the movie Aliens.
Whats the chunks in the other pics?

Did those cats melt or something? What happened?

Slightly off-topic but figured this was a good place to ask as there are some very knowledgeable people here and it's not really worth it's own thread

I've got an X5 4.6is with a bad engine. Rod bearings went out in a pretty dramatic way, crank is scored and at least one cylinder wall shows some moderate scoring. I think I know a place that can fix the crank, so assuming the rest of the internals are re-usable, it stands to reason that I could have a machine shop bore a 4.4 block to the 93mm bore of the 4.6is and do the final honing myself with an-30 paste?

I haven't torn the engine down yet to determine the condition of the internals, but it was running when torn down just with some nasty noises. Would really like to rebuild it if possible, just never gone that far with an engine before, and heard a lot of conflicting reports online on if these blocks can be bored or not. This thread has actual concrete evidence though which is nice

There's also the other thread thats all about M6x internals and rebuilding Graham... might be better place for it... that one forked here really when 1999_540 was asked for more info/updates on his own project...

Yes, the cats melted, a new learning experience for me!

Building/Boring a 4.4 block, is what I had planned to do with my 4.6 leftover internals, but only 6 piston's and cams survived the explosion, sounds like a good idea to me!

Sweet - so seems that even if only part of the drivetrain is salvageable, maybe I can make a stroker, or do as you did and bore it with the stock stroke. Appears there are options then

That's a fair point, I'll post in that thread when I have the engine out and have an idea of the general condition of the internals and have more specific questions. Seems like the short answer to my questions is it can be done, so I now just need to figure out whats going on inside my 4.6 and go from there

I see some improvement. A hand held grinder is a beginning welders best friend. I've got 2 of them!

No on the backpurging, i'm not setup for it and the previous welder made the inside ugly already, Pushing and pulling, just trying to make it work!

I'll work on the grinding part, I'm good at that!, a second grinder is a great idea, I keep swapping grinder, cutting wheel, and wire wheel. a decent grinder is only around $15 now

Hmmm, do you mean you're adding a Y-pipe after the X-pipe, to finish the system?
