Group Buy on 3 Piece BMW Roadstar Wheels 18"

I have had a few requests lately for 18" wheels, and knowing how much time they have taken to build (6-12 weeks) with Schott Wheels, I have pushed them back until I heard back from them. I have also been working with them to find a finish that is acceptable to call BMW Shadow Chrome, which we have found, and I am happy with. Chrome Shadow is a elusive wheel finish, and this is the first time I've found a powdercoat that is close enough of offer it as that name.

I think we are there. I am starting a list here, and in about 3 weeks, I'm going to go ahead and make the order of 12 sets, as in the last year, every month someone has either purchased my personal set of 18" wheels, or they make the wait to do 18" wheels and they put an order together.

In total I have built about 20 sets of wheels between 18" and 19". I have only sold by original 5 sets of 19" wheels I built, and the rest have been 18".

Doing these 1 set at a time finished in a powdercoated center, with all the machine detail, backside lightening pockets, details for the alignment holes, pocket for the ///M badge etc they run $5200 a set now with raw material increases. With doing a order set of 48 wheel centers, 12 wheel sets at once, I can offer the cost down to $4800. Shipping usually costs about $200.

I was going to order half the wheels in 18x8.5"/10.5 with ideal offsets no rubbing on BMW M roadster/Coupe applications, and the other half of the order in 18x9/11 for the more agressive fitment, but can still be able to offer no rubbing as long as someone isn't doing 315mm/265mm tires Rear/Front. With only slight rolling of the fenders, 315 30 18 tires work great. I haven't tried R888R or other R Compound tires yet, I suspect that more than slight rolling would be required.

The width of wheels really comes down to how you want the tires to look (295 30 18 Rear and 245 35 18 being the most popular choice) on the wheel. 11"/9" widths really square out the tire perfectly, much like the factory maybe slightly more stretch than the original 9"/7.5" wheels on 245/225 wheels. For those that want more tire protection, and like the look of a little tire buldge, then the 10.5"/8.5" has met those expectations.

For those interested, please state if you want the rim lips powdercoated or Polished ($200 for for powdercoated lips). Hardware is chrome plated. If titanium hardware is wanted, it $900 additional.

Once I receive these wheels, if they aren't pre purchased and assigned to a buyer with a 50% deposit, then I will be selling them for $5200 plus shipping.

Work has been very busy, but I want people who want these wheels to be able to purchase them, so keeping an inventory is key to doing this, while also offering this group buy. I could see doing one of these group buys once a year. If the group buy exceeds 12 sets, I would be happy to do more. This is purely a hobby, and I enjoy sharing the end result of this personal project with this community. The center wheel forgings are the same as what forgeline, HRE, etc uses, as are the wheel lips. Schott wheels puts an amazing amount of time and detail into each wheel, and I have always said that if someone isn't happy with their wheels for any reason, I would purchase them back. The wait time is just borderline unacceptable to replace them. I'm looking to avoid that.

The only configuration of these wheels available is sandwhich mount (meaning wheel lip, center forging, wheel lip) with exposed hardware. Please don't ask about hidden hardware, that was a fail.

If you have any concerns about clearing big brakes, the make sure you mention it, and also note that the 9"/11" width setup allows for the greatest brake clearance.

Please chime in, PM me, or feel free to call or text me at 801-310-8170. I'll do my best to check in at least once a day on this to answer any questions. For those wheel the 18" wheels, feel free to post pics here. Many of which I haven't seen in person, as they direct shipped from Schott wheels.

I don't know man. $5,200 for a set of wheels that look just like stock wheels is a lot of coin.

It's a sickness for sure. It's all relative. You would spend thousands more to get a wheel of similar quality with zero attention to design or functional fitment. In many cases, just getting a big brake to fit under a wide front wheel that fits right with no spacers is nearly impossible on our cars. For how "factory stock" they seem, how they look is the difference between a finely fitted custom suit and a cheap ill fitted suit from men's Warehouse.

They weigh between 20 and 24.5 lbs depending on the width, offset, and diameter. Including the 19x11.5 rears I run on my car. It's been an incredible journey. Mike Schott rarely offers a turn key wheel manufacturing setup for private label companies, let alone a nobody hobbiest like me. Even today, this wheel center maintains the record for a 18" wheel center forging in taking twice as long to machine as any wheel he has done before. If you study schott wheels, his hot rod wheel Line has some insane tolerance fitment details and deep recess detail machining.

I'm not here to sell you guys. For those who want to remain private, feel free to pm, text or call. I just wanted to let everyone know the long lead time in doing these wheels I'm attempting to overcome, and the fact I can't keep a set of 18" wheels on my own cars for the last 2 years, means something. That said, the new setup I have on my car running r888r 305 30 19 rears /265 30 19 fronts I won't run another setup/tire size on it. It's putting down power like nothing I've ever driven on. The additional diameter and tire type just make it amazing. Now of I can just get the driveshaft overnight from DSS.

Same here; will trade reinforcement kits for wheels...

Given that the stock Roadstars are the best looking wheels on the M Coupes/Rdstrs, these wheels just make it even better__they're drop-dead gorgeous!

Many functional improvements, extremely high quality build, and they actually look like they belong on the car? Sounds like he can ask whatever he wants for them. I am not aware of a functionally equivalent wheel that puts a bold check mark in all of those boxes.

People are willing to pay me $4k to hack on their sub-$1k shotgun and some things do not need to make financial sense. With certain things, the guy doing the work or making the product simply names his price and the market will either support it and it moves or he lowers the price until people jump. Given that these are already selling and people are still happy about it with product rolling down the road, I'd say the price has settled. They look amazing, by the way, and I can't begin to imagine how much time ($) is in this project from the start to having the first finished wheel ready to ship. We rarely to never see anything like this on the market because most people can't see past the price point for true custom product. I can't afford it, but wow do they look amazing.

    Stubbornness is a virtue....

Would all the wheels in the group buy be Chrome Shadow? Is Hyper Silver an option?

If Santa is kind to me this year, I'd be interested in a set (10.5/8.5). My Apex wheels would be so jealous.

In the spirit of the current theme of trades, are you interested in a pair of high end cowboy boots by chance? My wife just bought me a pair of Crocodile boots as a belated anniversary gift, but she's about as interested in those as she is in cars (zero interest in both). I'm kidding, you can't have my kicks. If I'm in, I'll trade the wheels for cash.

No, if I were just purchasing blindly, I would do half gloss silver, half shadow chrome, and then do both 8.5/10.5 and 9/11 widths likely 50/50 also.

Cash or Cowboy boots is the same to me. I do live in Lehi Utah, and I'm sure boots would be better than cash lol.

I'm not ordering any 19" wheels. I have two sets on hand. Here are pics of 19". Only visual difference between 18" and 19" is the 19" is a stepped lip.

    Here are mine. 19x11.5 305 30 19 r888r and 19x9 265 30 19 r888r.

For those needing more grip, these tires are amazing. Never driven a tires on the street that handle like they do.

IMO, getting those in black doesn't do them justice one bit.

    Hi Greg,
please put me down for one set of the Roadstar 18x8.5/10.5.
    Few questions on finishes:
    1. Is the powder coat bright silver?
    2. Would you be willing to put ceramic coat on the polish lip so it’s ready to go once I receive them?
    3. I assume the hardware you mention are wheel bolts?

    Thanks

How the hell are you guys getting 265s in the front? I can barely get 235s on my stock wheels with my 12mm spacer to clear my wilwood calipers!

Yes, chrome hardware. And anyone who wants their wheels ceramic coated (ceramic pro 9h) I can include that.

Yes, bright gloss silver is one of the options.

Yes, wheel bolts. The titanium hardware saves about .75 lbs per wheel. So, 3+ lbs of unsprung weight with a complete wheel set is nice. And they are a different look. The lightest front wheel I have done in 9" wide front was 20.1 lbs, and it had titanium hardware. Lightest rear wheel I have done in 11" rear is 23.9 lbs. What is interesting is my 19" 11.5" rears don't weigh about 24.3, and they don't have Titanium hardware. I have found that the 19" vs 18" don't have a measurable difference even in the same widths. The machining is a bit different around the register where the wheels meet, and I think that is why, there are some other variables when comparing a sandwhich mount, and reverse mount shells. Regardless, the weight saved of at least .75 lbs per wheel is a given when comparing the steel hardware vs titanium, but really, I did it for the look on my black chrome set. That said, the first set of pics is a set that was fully painted, then finished with chrome hardware, and the chrome just reflects the color of the wheel, so they actually don't look out of place like I thought they might.

Hidden hardware won't ever be by me. Existing wheel center shape /design doesn't accommodate the thread depth needed for blind bolts.

How the hell are you guys getting 265s in the front? I can barely get 235s on my stock wheels with my 12mm spacer to clear my wilwood calipers!
Quite simple. Keep tire diameter at 25.25" or under. 19" in a 265 30 19 has a distinct advantage over most 265 tires as it does that. I've run 265 35 18 and it rubbed more than I liked, but it was still usable, I actually tracked the car on that size.

Then of course, having the perfect offset, clearing brakes without unnecessarily pushing the wheel outward is also the trick.

Your experience with spacers and brake fitment and tire rubbing was the exact reason I did this. Then add in aesthetic perfection (yes, I understand all in the eye of the beholder, but by default I win, because I didn't stop design until I was satisfied).

Honestly, if Omar's car came with the wheels it stated in multiple magazine articles (k58 kenisis 18x11/18x9) I would likely still have them. But then the ugly truth of 18x8.5, on top of having to use 8mm spacers to clear the brakes, I immediately ordered ccw wheels, made those work, then went on to explore better looking wheels. After several sets of wheels, I figured I had to finally put a stop to the madness .

Thanks Greg, please ceramic coat my set of wheels.

    For the wheel bolts:
what finishes are the Titanium bolts ?
What’s the spec of the bolt?
    Do you have photos?

My concern with chrome bolts is that the shinny surface might wear prematurely or rust overtime.

    Thanks
