Intermittent Driver's Side Window - solved

    '93 740i

My driver's side window is operating intermittently. It will work for a couple of days without issue, then not work for a couple of days...usually when I pull up to the drive-thru, lol.

I can sometimes get it to function by opening and closing the door, although not always. I have Shogun's auto up/down module installed (and have for 5 years without issue).

    Questions:

Is the window supposed to open and close when the door is open? My window has never operated when the door is open, not sure if this is a standard feature or if I'm just special.

I am suspecting either a break in the wiring or a motor that has a dead spot that will get moved just enough when closing the door to get the motor to function.

Anyone have a similar experience and any advice before I dig into it this week?

    Thanks much.

    Greg

I suspect a broken wire loom which still has contact sometimes. Main suspect is always the driver door side where the wire loom goes from the A-pillar into the door, as this door is mainly used
Here is a detailed pdf for the repair, 1 MB, but to download it you might have to register first http://www.7-forum.com/forum/showthr...t=118598&page=

Shogun was correct, there was a break in the power wire to the window motor. Once I pulled back the rubber cover between the door and the body the break was obvious. I soldered in a short piece of wire to relieve the stress on the wire. Not much room to work but I managed to get my soldering iron in there without melting any other wires. Nice to be able to go through a drive-thru again, lol.

Thanks as always Shogun for your invaluable help.

Here a pic of such a typical fault, usually on driver door side between A-pillar and door http://twrite.org/shogunnew/files/doorwire.jpg
