correct fan, alternator and AC belt part numbers

    Hello all,
I'm not sure if this was asked before and if it was, my apologies. I need replacement belts for the fan, alternator and AC. I looked it up on realoem and this is what I found.

    Fan belt: 11221706788 - 12.5 x 1040
    11231711090 - 12.5 x 1055

    Alt. belt: 11221706788 - 12.5 x 1040
    11231711090 - 12.5 x 1055

    A/C belt: 64551716960 - 12.5 x 835
    64521722373 - no mesurement

I'm not sure which one to order. The car is a 1990 735i, mfg. date is 7/90. Thanks for your help.

    I use continental belts. the A/C belt is 13 X 855

the power steering belt is 10 X 865

the main fan belt is 13 X 1055

These are the extra belts that I carry. I put this exact set on three years ago.

That depends on some factors, for example my 750 has the hot climate version with a different visco fan pulley diameter for higher visco clutch fan speed and that also needs a different length of belt. Use the VIN and search by that on www.realoem.com
In case you need help, post the last 7 digits of the VIN

I gave him the belts that I use thinking he has my exact car. Originally bought mine in New York and he's in New Jersey. Exact same car. Cars might have come off the line the same day. I've changed belts twice since I bought the car. Never because I had a bad one. Just all three belts as preventive maint. And I carry these three in the trunk just in case something crazy happens. You think the M30 might come with a hot climate version if it were purchased in Florida instead of New York?

Most probably the same spec like on your car, just wanted to mention that there are differences. Also not sure if that is a US spec car, he only mentioned "The car is a 1990 735i, mfg. date is 7/90".
For example masbury has a collection of imported BMW, some from Japan, and these usually have hot climate version.
So the safest is always to go by the parts catalog with the VIN to double check.

Just as an example, when I select a 02/1990 US spec 735i with automatic, there is a fan belt
    Fan belt 12,5X1040 from 09/1989 11221706788 http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=11_0303
and here 2 different versions of pulleys, US spec 735 02/1990 http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=11_4605
    05 Pulley 130MM from 09/1989 11511706781
    05 Pulley D=144 B=12,7 from 09/1989 11511271423 ..... only in conjunction with Fan belt 12,5X1055 from 09/1989 11231711090

I made the same mistake years ago, when I went to one of the US online shops and ordered belts based on my selection 1989 E32 750iL, belt came, wrong part, as they do not have the Japan hot climate version in their website.
So from then on when I order parts online, I first use the ETK based on my VIN and then order based on these data, not what is in the online/website.

I was also wondering the same thing re: belts. I ordered Continental belts last week for my car, from RockAuto. This is what came in:

    Continental Elite 17331 (13 X 840)
    Continental Elite 17411 (13 X 1040)
    Continental Elite 15346 (11 X 865)

They are slightly different from your belts, Croughteon. Which belts are correct?

All I can say is I bought the car in Feb of 1990. The manufacture date is 12/89. When the car was 10 years old I replaced all three belts during one of my valve adjustments. In 2015 I replaced all three for a second time. Both times I used the belt sizes I posted, and I have the same three belts in my car for back up emergency. Never used a belt that wasn't continental and never had a problem with a single belt. So If there were no M30 changes from 1990 to your 1992, I would suggest the sizes I have on the car now.

It simply depends on the VIN, check the installed ones on YOUR car, outside of the belts are the numbers/specs.
For example Canada version will not have a hot climate version, probably the EURO standard version (but even there there are differences, for example the Scandinavian versions have slightly different specs because of the climate).
So if I use a 12/1991 standard EURO 735i with automatic,

Just to confirm, yesterday I tried to install the AC belt in 13x840 size. It turns out the size is incorrect, it doesn't fit onto the pulleys.

The size Croughton posted is the correct one: 13x855, at least on a 1992 735iL.

Is it normal for the AC belt to be very difficult to replace on the M30?
I have the correct belt in 13x855 size but I can't see how it can be pulled over the crank pulley.

I even removed the AC bracket to get the AC compressor as close as possible and it's still way too tight.

    Any tips?

Found a great trick over on mye28.com. Used the starter to get the belt on the AC pulley. Giving two flicks of the key got the belt nicely in place.

I wonder if you might have a different compressor on your 92 735il than on my 90 735I. Mine came with the SEIKO and that size belt slips right on by loosening that one bolt. I looked on RealOem and it says with your manufacture date of 12/91 you might have a Bosch or BEHR. It shows both were installed at the factory during those months. Maybe the pulley might be a hair larger, who knows. As long as it's on and working you're good. Is it blowing cold?

My unit is also a Seiko.

The AC engages but it disengages shortly after (button light remains lit however). Maybe because it wasn't hot enough outside? It was 17 C (62 F). I didn't have a lot of time to test it, will do that today.

Your A/C compressor is supposed to turn on and off. There is an evaporator temp sensor plugged into the evaporator on the driver's side. It keeps a temp read of the Evaporator and sends a signal to the compressor when to stop running and when to turn on again. If you're running cold then you're good. Yesterday I was at Wallgreens with my window open and and the motor running with the A/C on. It clicked on and off about every 20 seconds. Usually you don't hear the clicking but with the drivers window open and the car up against the drive-in wall you hear every sound. If it disengages without cold air, you might be short on freon. There's a safety switch on the compressor that won't allow it to turn on if the freon is too low. This is what the evap sensor looks like.

Thanks for the info Croughton. I ran the AC today as it was a bit hotter and I could feel the cold air, looks like it's working correctly.
