I have a 325 CI Coupe I purchased on Monday, the 2 center light and te fog lights work well. The out side lights will not work and it shows then to be out. Is there a way to test the ballast on the car? If there is could someone share the steps with me. One other question what is the best service manual to buy. I have some things to check out as well.
Thanks,
Tony
Welcome to the forums Tony!
Unplug connector that goes from the car harness into the ballast and see if you have 12V coming to it after you turn on low beams. If you do have around 12V, your ballasts and bulbs are primary suspects. If you don't, you may have an issue with LCM (Light Control Module). If you find out that the issue lies after the plug, plug it back in and see you can get a spare known good bulb. Plug the bulb into the D2S round connector, make sure the lights are off when you do this and don't touch the glass of the bulb with your fingers. Light comes on = bad bulb, repeat for the other side. No light = bad ballast.

Thanks I found the problem, the wiring inside the is all bear and the insulation is coming off all of the wiring inside the housing. I have been looking for 2 used headlights, they are the adaptive HID headlights. Thanks for your post.
Does anyone know of a good place to buy a pair of replacement assembly for my car? Also do I have to replace them with the same type? I seen some other headlights on sites that will fit, but they aren’t the adaptive headlights. Any advice, like I said I’m new here and this is my first BMW to own. Thanks
Tony
I don't think you have adaptive headlights. Self leveling - yes, but I don't believe e46 came with adaptive headlights.
Have you done any steps outlined above? What is the outcome?
My wiring is all messed up and I don’t want to damage it anymore than it is. When they looked my VIN number up they said it was adaptive headlights, they have two boxes mounted underneath the housing and they have a motor inside the housing and the HID onside lights will move move left and right. Is a common issue that the insulation has come off most of the wiring inside the housing?
Thanks
Yes, wiring does get crusty inside of housings due to high temperatures.
