Sunday I’m looking at a 05 X5 4.4 auto. I’ve owned a bunch of e36s and currently own an 04 330vert. I do all my own repairs.
There arent any service records wity with this car. The only potential issue that concerns me is the timing chain guides. What are the symptoms and what’s involved in replacing them?

Fault code 0020 I think and a loud knocking noise from the upper timing chain area, the thing that lets go is the chain rail that goes between both heads kind of u shaped but the part that the chain rubs on is just clipped on, most chain rails the part the the chain rubs on is glued or attatched some how to where it's one piece. This clipped on design can kind of break at one end. I've seen e38's with 80k have the problem and much higher mileage so who knows when it will happen.
Just an FYI...an 05 X5 4.4 has the N62 engine...not the M62TU engine. The N62 is a new generation BMW engine...and the facelift e53 is a kind of hybrid between the old and new gen BMWs. The e53 still uses the same old communication bus (I/M/K/P/Can/Diagnostic bus) like the e38/e39/e52 etc with high cluster)...but has the newer gen engine that you'll find in the pre-facelift e65/e60/e70....as well as some new gen technology like a bluetooth TCU (if you have premium pkg or BMW Assist) and adaptive bi-xenon headlights...as well as actually having xDrive (40/60 (front/rear) variable AWD system with a bias toward the rear...but can give up to 100% torque to one wheel if needed vs the DSC-X AWD system the pre-facelift e53 X5s have which is a 38/62 (front/rear) permanent split torque system.
Not that the N62 can't have timing chain/guide issues...its more like it has it's own set of issues that are in a different barrel vs the M62TU. You're more likely to see valve stem issues (blue smoke from exhaust upon quick/fast acceleration) than timing chain guide issues. Do a google/internet search for BMW N62 issues...that would be more educational than conflating the M62TU issues found on the 2000-2003 e53 X5 4.4 that had the m62TU.

Either way I would only recommend the 3.0 engine
Ok I looked at the car. It is amazingly clean. Seats look like the car only has 30,000 miles. Exterior has a few normal scuff marks but nothing unusual. Undercarriage looks like a California car. Good tires all around. Took it for a test drive and no blue smoke from the valve stem seals on that N62. Overall I was VERY impressed. I can’t imagine trying to drive one of those with only the 6 cylinder engine that’s in my 330.
Negatives. No service records so I’ll probably have to swap out the cooling system pretty soon. Car is getting a Self Leveling System Inactive. That could be just about anything but I’m not using it for heavy loads very often so it’s not the end of the world if it doesn’t get fixed right away. Needs new rotors like every used car.
Hes asking $5900 but he’ll come down to $5000. I should be able to get him down to $4800. I think that’s a fair price for this car. And it’s pretty close so I don’t have to drive 3 hours to pick it up. I should also mention this is not a daily driver for me. This is for when I need to haul stuff in the back or use the trailer hitch.
Any thoughts?
