That is a bad ass E23

I am curious about bore taper and bearing wear. Every 745i engine I have torn down has awful cylinder walls and insane bearing wear from 'techs' setting the AFM way incorrectly.
Going to reuse OE slugs or going forged?

Who here has done a sharknose conversion? I'm curious about what parts are needed other than the nose/kidneys. If this is total sacrilege, stop me now.
A slug is a slang term for a piston.
Post up pictures of the cylinder walls and bearings for us if they look so new.

Hard to tell as they are still covered in oil. One I tore down ran fat for so long the fuel dilution of the oil ate all the way through down to the copper!!! Cylinder walls were glass smooth.
Ross already has the M30 design available. Who is making your pistons?

Kickass, they make awesome ones. Are they going to be copies of the M106 style? The turbo engines also came with chrome rings.
Now I understand the pics...teardown is out of town.

Tear down is in Florida, I'm in Minnesota. The distance is unfortunate, but I'll be flying down for the final few days of building and driving it home. We aren't totally decided on style yet but I'm sure it'll be similar to M106 with a mid-range compression.
We still have to settle on which style we want but they seem to run about $2-300 each. We're going to polish and balance the factory rods for this build, thinking they should be safe up to about 800hp.
Man, you trust this shop a lot more than I do. The numbers they are throwing at you don't seem to be based in reality. The Scandinavian builds that see 500 & 600+ hp are sometimes running 30+ psi boost. Where did they come up w/ the rating of 800 hp for stock rods? I am not an expert on M30 turbo builds, quite the opposite. But I don't believe people w/o doing research and gathering evidence based on similar builds and reported dyno results and longevity.

I honestly don't care as long as I see 400whp. In reality, I have no idea what the engine will be capable of with the given modifications, but I'm going to be stoked regardless.
However, I would appreciate this thread staying generally positive and aiming towards seeing the 600whp come to fruition, be that suggesting proven components, specific tuning recommendations, help sourcing needed parts, etc. I don't want this to turn into a thread that flames a seemingly reputable shop for giving a number that may be difficult to reach. A lot of the current car community seems to be geared towards disrespecting each others builds rather than helping to build each other up, and I find that disturbing (with the exception of hating on "stance").
What we're aiming for is a unique take on my absolute favorite BMW. I love this chassis and am here trying to connect with like-minded individuals who have experience with it.
Smart move on OE rods, they can take some abuse. I would fit them with ARP fasteners while in there. BTW ARP main studs from the E30 M10 fit the M106 if you care. You will have to line hone the mains if you want to do that.
I would consider H beams from Pauter or someone similar, but unless you are going to spin some big RPM I do not see the point.
Quite excited to see the Venoilas for this. What forging did you choose?

Nice, hopefully it turns out all good when you get it back from Florida.
Good reads and info post in here
Just looking to see how this is coming. You pick it up yet?

Hi .. how is the build going ? Interesting. How far have you come ?
Have a couple of questions.
When you talk about hp is on crank or wheels ?
The rods can stand a lot of hp without problems 600hp on crank IF you dont put the rev limiter to high. To be safe max 6500 on original. That is on the SAFE side. Just because someone made more .. well well.
The amount of psi lets say 20 psi and a certain amount of power does not always mean the same power on different turbos. Big turbo 20 psi and 20psi on small turbo .. Difference.
