Hey guys, I am David from Germany and wanted to share my ongoing project with you, an e36 318i going M50b20tu Turbo.
I am trying to make a lot of pictures, so hopefully someone else can gain something from here .
Base:
- e36 318i
Mods:
- M50b20tu
- stock pistons
- 2x Head gasket with decomp plate
- Clutch & Flywheel - e*** ftw
- Holset HX35W
- Selfmade Topmount Manifold
- 440ccm injectors
- Ecumaster DET3
- RSR Performance widebandlambda KIT with LSU 4.9
- Compression Ratio around 8,5:1
The Plan is to run about 1,2-1,5 bar of boost in closed loop and hopefully more than 320hp .
The pictures show the car atm, some "toys", the engine ( thats what i did yesterday, nothing special just time consuming) and the draft of the new coolant circuit.

Some Update on this:
The Manifold is ready soon, have to do the last welds. The Turbo will go through the hood.. ARP Head Studs with decomp + 2x Gasket. More updates coming

7.3:1 compression? why?
anything lower than 8.5:1 is useless.
The compression ratio was pretty much the result of combining the crankshaft, pistons and rods. But i havent told you that the engine is a stock m50b20tü with just the decompression plate now to keep it simply at first. My fault sorry.. big injectors, ecu etc are staying the same.

When calculating with the formula for the otto cycle, it basically is as Raimo says. Its not necessary, but you dont loose much if you go down till 6:1..
8,5:1 seems to be a common value, but i dont get why this seems like some kind of religion... especially on boosted cars you gain much headroom with low CR
yeah you're right. i used wrong word but you got the meaning.
personally i wouldn't go lower than 9:1 unless regular pump gas was obligatory.
currently i'm on 17-18 psi on stock engine with 100 octane and water injection.
You can do that basically when you have a good ecu etc. Since i am just using the DET3 and dont have the capabilities and money to do proper dyno finetuning, i stick to low compression to not kill the engine with too much boost and a „not super perfect“ ignition map. Since the power difference is max. 5% (calculated) i am fine with the low compression and enough headroom to give it some more boost if i want to..

hi sorry can you tell me how did you connect det3 to the control unit? i have been trying for two weeks and it is not receiving rpm from the cas sensor ????
