2005 z4 Power Roof newbie teachable moment

I am a new owner of a almost pristine 2005 Z4 3.0i. I have been reading about possible problems with the car and the roof seems to be an issue. So when I could not operate my roof after washing my car, I became a bit concerned. It had been working flawlessly prior. When pressing the top down button, nothing happened, I mean NOTHING. Since it wasn't releasing at the windshield I figured it was a short of some kind. Top motor did not engage. After panic transitioned to defeat, I figured I was looking at a few days of troubleshooting, at the very least. Thank God for the internet!!! My newbie mistake was playing with the stupid shelf in the trunk. If the shelf is in the up position, the top is disabled. I went to my trunk dropped the shelf and voila, it works.

I am sure, being the challenged mechanic I am, there will be more developments to come!

Cheers...and God I love this car!

If possible, read through your owners manual,
it's a quick way of finding out the quirks of your new toy,
plus let you fully engage and enjoy all available newfound options!

Thanks MIKYZZ4! I am doing exactly that....I found my complete owner's manual tucked under the driver's seat....now....if I could only find an extra key LOL.

    Thank you for the welcome.

Here is a helpful site for repair info not provided in an owners manual:
    https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/,
and of course a new BMW owner can't do without a part#lookup with diagrams site:
    https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/select

Too cool!! These links are awesome! The world has certainly changed a bit since tinkering with cars back in the '70s.

    Thanks again!!

If there isn't a blown fuse?
Does the button on center console blink red when trying to lower the roof?
I'd try popping the trunk(boot?) and look at top left corner of opening and see if the red pull tab is out? If so, pull a little and rotate 90 degrees and push back to parked position.
Then swivel up the tray by twisting both rotating knobs up, then back down as this is where they need to be for the roof to work. I guess BMW assumes you'll keep the roof up if you're heading out on holiday? If these suggestions don't resolve your issue then it's one of the micro switches.

Fly me out to CA and I will be more than happy to help out in person? Never been but always wanted to check to out.

I read the manual multiple times, but completely forgot about the interlock that prevents the roof from working

I can relate to the feeling of dread when it doesn't work and the sheer elation at realizing its not broken

Luckily the top situation is back to normal, thank you.

I will have to keep flying you out in mind during the next issue..

    Thank you for the response,

    Mike

I will read through the manual a few times to help understand the car but, unfortunately, it doesn't guarantee I will remember the information when I need it!

Dread and elation are probably good terms for describing ownership, dread when something isn't right and elation for the rest of the time!

Good to hear its back in working order.

I try to just think positive things when I am out driving...
If it breaks then so be it and I am pretty confident that there is a forum I can ask for help, maybe find a previous post or a full write up that helps me out.
I say this comment so frequently that I could easily say that I state this more than I do curse words anymore, 'What did we do before we had the internet?!'
