    Did the intake manifolds and...

Been a while - partly because I sold the CSi because I couldn't import a lefty from Switzerland back home to New Zealand.

Got home to NZ and picked up an "as new" 850ci. New Zealand new so not an import from Japan, Malaysia or Australia. I say it's as new because when I got it there was only 40k km on the odometer - yep, we're metric here :-)

OK, so possibly from lack of use, experienced the dreaded intake vacuum leak. Thought long and hard and then decided to do it. Purchased new gaskets $1000NZ and spent the next 4 weekends swapping the old gaskets for new.

It isn't a difficult job - logical however, very challenging. Getting to those lower nuts especially front and back is a mission. When I took the old gaskets off, I was surprised to see no cracks or damage on the gaskets. They looked like new, which I would expect on vehicle with low k's.

Anyway, got it back together with the new gaskets and oh no! Same issue.

To cut a long story short, it wasn't the gaskets. The two hard rubber mount stays that support the intake (just above the valve cover) had collapsed causing a lot of weight to bear down. This was causing the leak. Replaced and back in business.

While I was at it, did the rear fuel hoses and also the pinion diff seal.

    Cheers

You can usually clean the intake gaskets and use REINZOSIL High Temp Sealant and never have to worry about vacuum leaks again (plus a $12 tube will do 2 cars and is a lot cheaper than new gaskets).

We have made in our group more than 10 intake gasket resealings and never had to use new gaskets, just liquid seal.

The only set I have ever replaced, went out at 215,000 miles (I replaced them more for aesthetic reasons - they probably could have gone longer).
