Restoring/repainting black plastic trim pieces? What to use?

    Hey all,

I'm not looking to turn my luxury trim into a sport trim or anything like that. However, I am looking to simply take all of my black trim pieces (ash tray cover, sunglass cover, emergency brake surround, cupholder unit, etc) and get them back to that matte black look from the factory. Over the years these pieces get scratched up and can really age the interior of the car. I'd like to clean up these pieces in my M3!

It appears to me that the coating on these pieces isn't really paint, but some sort of a plasti-dip material. Has anyone found a product that can bring these trim pieces back to their semi-textured black factory finish? I imagine you'll have to lightly sand off the old coating and re-apply the new, but I can't seem to find any decent DIYs or products for this need.

Thanks in advance for all your help!

Most folks just use warm water and a scrubber to get all of the material off. Then prime the parts with a quality plastic primer and paint them black.

I've done a few interiors and I used lacquer thinner to strip off the rubber coating. It does bleach the plastic but you'll be repainting anyway. I use SEM black plastic paint. It sticks like crazy and looks just like the factory parts. You just need to make sure to get all the old rubber coating off but not scratch the plastic itself.

Thank you both! I will try the SEM black plastic paint!
