Hi Everyone. I am trying to "hardwire" my dashcam and radar detector to my new (to me) 2017 X6 5.0.
I bought a fuse tap and spliced the red wires for each device. The fuse tap fit into slot 51, under the passenger side glove box. I tried to drill a screw to ground the wires back by the door hinge.
I got no love.
Further investigation revealed the fuse tap was not exactly the same size. (see picture 1)
I also realized the fuse tap may need a fuse in it. (see picture 2)
Or am I grounding incorrectly?
Thanks for reading and any responses.
Stephan
The glove box hinge isn’t likely ground. Ground the electronics as close to each device as possible.
Update: bought an ATM fuse tap and put in two 10 amp fuses in the back of the tap. Found a glove box screw that worked for ground.
Found that empty fuse slot 51 was always on, so plugged my phone into slot 25 which is being used by the phone.
Everything seems to work.
Fuse to the rating of the component you are trying to protect,
10A seems rather high for those electronics.
