Low Buck - Track Rat E36 Exhausts

In the continuation of my track rat E36 HPDE car theme, I'd like to replace the exhaust over the winter. It's currently running stock M52 headers, stock catalytic converter, and an M3 muffler.

Yes, I know I can go buy a race exhaust from any number of speciality suppliers, but that doesn't really follow the theme. The car is no longer run on the street and trailered to the track. So now worries about street legality.

Anyone running more of a DIY set-up than a purchased race system?

    Thanks!

If you can cut and weld, make a single 3 inch from the headers back. Add a straight through muffler or two.

Be careful on DIY/aftermarket header back systems if any of the tracks you run on have noise restrictions. Just make sure you check all of those prior to getting a loud race setup and not being able to track at certain locations. Also be careful with O2 sensor placements so as the wiring does not contact the headers/exhaust and fry your wiring harness.

Just a few lessons learned the hard way. Happy exhausting.

Thanks so far for the responses.

A couple of clarifying points. I am not necessarily after full race exhaust, particularly the noise factor. I would like to run the car in the garage without annoying wife and neighbors.

I am assuming I can drop some weight swapping from what I have now. If I pick up a few cheap Hp that would be great as well.

The Spec3 exhaust from Mitchum is hella cheap (maybe $300? I really don't remember) and will save you a bunch of weight. The fitment requires massaging. As for the noise, it's relatively quiet on the racecar scale, but very loud on the streetcar scale. Mitchum Enterprises Richmond, VA (804)-379-1239.

That’s an excellent suggestion. While I am not headed down that route yet, I am following along the Spec3 FB page to get familiar with the requirements and the dynamic of the group.

I didn’t realize the Spec3 exhaust was that inexpensive.

Not sure what the plan is for the weekend, but thanks for the offer. I've been through both of your builds, we have similar build styles / approaches, although you are way faster than me at VIR :-)
