    2007 525ix head unit swap

I bought a 07 525IX when I got it the Info Screen in the center of the dash was black.
I checked all fuses and grounds to the head unit and all was well.
I purchased a used head unit with exactly the same numbers on it .
I installed it and screen lit up and is responsive . But a message comes up saying " HEAD UNIT NOT CODED CORRECTLY". Also no sound is obtainable
I got a proper cable and software installed on my laptop ( WINKFP) . I ran INPA and WINKFP and 2 modules 62 MOSTGW and 63 MMI/CCC still show
the VIN from the donor headunit. Is this the problem that needs corrected?
I tried to change the VIN on these two modules but It does not seem to respond.
A BMW mechanic told me the modules can only be reprogrammed with ICOM B and the fiber optic adaptor because they are not on the CAN Bus.
    IS This correct?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
