What happens when you use up all your traction control?

So I was driving today, curvy roads. Nothing major. All of a sudden my dsc and brake light come on. I thought maybe my pads were low and that was part of the sensor telling me.

I did shut the car off and go into a store. I came out and started the car, both lights went off, dsc was operating normally.

Can Some one shed some light on this for me? Or point me to a thread that pertains to this?

    Thanks y'all.

It needs a diagnostic scan to see what errors are present.

Since the lights went off, I'm assuming they didn't get stored? Or are they stored for a certain amount of key cycles?

Codes usually get stored, so it should have a history of what happened. Usually a yaw sensor or a wheel speed sensor may have gone rogue.. but it can be other things, which is why a scan should be done first. Too many possibilities.

Have you refilled the traction control fluid recently? 1999 and earlier models need ASC fluid, later models need DSC fluid (or compatible)

I upgraded from the stock ASC fluid to Elmer's. Now I can practically drive upside down!

Is your rear end diff mount bad? I had some similar weird errors because my rear diff mount was dying.

Had a similar problem on an e31 - mine was a siezing ABS pump. Turns on the DSC light at times and the ABS lights sometimes as well.
Happens more often the less you drive the car and if you drive it so that ABS does not activate. Hook the car up to a diagnostic system and cycle the pump as a cure/prevention.

    Not sure if serious.

    So I need AC/DC fluid?

I recently put in poly sub frame bushings, mount was good.

I have never heard of special ASC/DSC fluids, as far as I know the system operates with regular brake fluid (DOT4) taken from the brake fluid system in the car.

The AC/DC fluid goes in the reservoir next to the blinker fluid.

AC/DC is great stuff, compatible with ASC and DSC. Run the stuff high in Angus Young for the best traction control module protection possible

I tried AC/DC fluid and was thunderstruck. The difference shook me all night long. I used to be in the red, but now I am back in black. If I keep this up, I’ll be on the highway to hell. Replacing the fluid is a dirty deed, but it’s done dirt cheap.

OP, you may have a bad yaw sensor under your feet or some dirty malfunctioning speed sensors at the wheels. A few years ago, I ruined the yaw sensor by steam cleaning my carpet. The symptom was the DSC and BRAKE lights would light up and stay on if I took a tight turn. They would cycle off at shut down and not light again unless I was cornering near the limit. The fix was a new sensor and a clearing of the codes. To check the codes, you neeed to use the socket under the hood, not the obdii port. Good luck.

I had similar issues with an X3. Turned out to be a bad alternator creating lower than normal voltage while driving. The battery was good and it had no issues starting but it triggered the warning lights from time to time.

I always drive with asc&abs off, so I wouldn’t know how it behaves with them on... but boy is it a joy to drive sideways on wet roads.

How do you turn off ABS? And why?

    Push the button.

There is a button on the console that turns off the ABS. The light on the dash will light up and stay on.

That turns off ASC, not ABS.

Just remove left front wheel speed sensor and ASC/ABS will not work.

I do this because BMW ABS cuts in too early for any serious late braking into a corner. Also can't get the back end out because I can't lock the rears on gymkhana sessions either..
