    Inquiry: Manual Swap - 1984 733i E23 manual into auto 1990 535i

Hello, will keep it simple and brief.

1984 donor/parts car with manual swap in good shape with low mile components i.e.) clutch, slave etc.

Being that both are m30 motors; it seems I may only need

    - E34 pedal assembly
    - Custom drive shaft

do I need anything else or am I set?

    Thanks

The sheet metal shift console of the G260/5 might need some custom mount and might not sit at the same height as the E34 stock shifter. You will see when you get in there that you may have to find a way to mount the back side of the console.

I see, doesn't seem too bad from what you mention. At the moment I am gathering parts and looking into a LSD medium diff for the E34. Unless my winter package auto already has a LSD diff ( I assume because it has heated seat.)?

I think a custom motor mount for the passenger side? The driver's side should be good but not 100% certain. When I installed my b35 into my e28 I had to fab a motor mount for the passenger side.

^ Is this in general for automatic m30 to manual?

I am trying to get the entire manual set up from the 1984 733i into the 1990 535i and I believe one shop mentioned I won't need anything other than a different/custom drive shaft and three pedal manual. Some others are unsure of what else I'd need.

I'm still trying to shop around for quotes. Some places are missing details and I'm finding out they're between 1k-3k

Kind of nuts... 1k understandable but they said I'd already need to transmission to be out of the car etc.

My goal is to have solid service about not knocking parts/scraping chassis/metal with a solid price to have the donor car towed in and full swapped from both.

Bay Area California if anyone has recommendations as well.

    Thanks

I think it's because the early M30B34 engines may not have the second set of motor mount bosses to correctly position the mount on the passenger side. I should check my M30 to verify.

When I installed my M30B35 engine in my e28 I had to design a motor mount to fit the subframe.

So the opposite is probably true.

Ah, well that's a third thing to add to my original bullet points. Doesn't seem too bad to do, I'll keep that in mind.

And 1k is way too cheap. Since your dropping an earlier engine that came with an earlier and incompatible Motronic version and then add the manual swap I would think 3k is a more realistic figure. And then there's the question of whether it's actually legal to install an earlier engine in CA.

It's good to know 3k is a realistic figure, I believe it is quite pricey for me but given how the pricing of these cars are it might be worth it. The ZF is not a bad automatic but cannot match me in a manual at all so I find it extremely annoying at times.

Also I don't know how they can tell if I have a older motor in the car. The 3.8 stroked m30 passes smog without a problem.

If you are paying a shop to install a non stock configuration where they will need to fabricate parts you are leaving yourself open for lots of expense(time & materials they'll call it) and headaches.
you'd be much better served by finding a correct and better b35 and 260/6 trans which will bolt right in as if it grew there.

An e30 M3 shifter bracket, item 2, part number 25-11-2-225-369 will bolt onto the back of the 733i trans and let you mount the rest of the e32/e34 shifter business.
