I have a 98 E36. Drop on 15"
What is best setup on 17" and tires
17 x 8 , 17x9.5 ???
Tires 205 40 17 or 215 40 17 or 225 35 17
Please help...
What a stance look..
Factory tire size for 17 inch rims are 225/45/17 in the front and 245/40/17 in the rear. Factory wheel widths are 17x7.5, 17x8, or 17x8.5
Anything wider will require fender work and possibly spacers. Totally dependent on ride height and wheel offset.

Plan to low the car with coilovers.. Slam it 17"
I seen people runnning 205 40 17 or 215 40 17
Run 255/40/17 square on 17x8.5/9.0/9.5
Your car will handle much better and also look very aggressive
Light fender roll/pull and you can run pretty low on coilovers
Might need front spacer to clear coilover

Omg are you guys serious.. Ive ran 17x9.5 squared 205/40/17 no spacers +22 offset slammed rolled the rear quarters a little and never had a problem daily drove as well
OP clearly said he wants a stance look, not performance. Clearly he is not looking for 255 tires.
OP search BMW rides and events section for stance specs threads

This is the most "e36" e36 thread I've seen in a while
Yes we all know its not ideal to stretch a smaller tire on a wider wheel.. therefore if you dont understand the concept of it just dont bother commenting we "Stance" guys hear it on a daily basis... we stretch smaller tires on wide wheels to minimize tire and fender gap between car and wheel. plus there are some guys that still drift with a stanced car.. Also a e36 stock height with 255/65's look disgusting lmfao for that ill get my grandmas car
Nobody makes a 255/65/17 but if they did it would be a truck/suv tire, so ya that would look pretty stupid on an e36. If you don’t think I understand “stance” search some of my threads lol A 205 on a 9.5 wide wheel looks terrible but if you think it looks good than that is all that matters.

I’m also looking for an answer. I want the best performance. 17x8.5. Suggestions?
17x8.5 or 17x9 will fit all around with 245/40-17 tires as long as the wheel offset is at least 40. You may need some small (10-12mm) spacers in front to clear the struts. I like my 17x9 Apex wheels a lot, and they fit great. They're the ones on my car in the picture in my signature below. They're significantly lighter than the stock wheels as well.
If you really want to maximize grip for the track or whatever, 255/40 tires will also fit on 17x9 wheels but you'll need some degree of fender rolling in the rear for clearance.
