Used INPA ISTA-P WINKFP on e46 and now No-Start

K+ DCAN cable. I just downloaded Winkfp, INPA, ISTA-D, ISTA-P. I connected to my e46 with INPA/ISTA-P/Winkfp to get familiar with the interfaces thinking it was safe since I was not going to change any settings. Later I tried to start the car and it cranks but no start. The battery was very low (yep read up and should have had strong charger hooked up while connected). I charged up the battery and still no start. Unhooked negative terminal to possibly reset and still no start.

I am wondering if ISTA-P did something I did not intend. The displays were not intuitive to me, no surprise since my first time using it. I am concerned that encoding was being done without my knowledge?? I terminated the program according to instructions. From reading up I did not see any red boxes so maybe a good sign, there is a term called bricking which I take is a bad thing.

Any guidance for me to get my car back?

You will likely have to reflash the DME, sounds like it got corrupted in the flash process.

Is this something I can do with the programs (Winkfp?) I have downloaded or is this strictly a dealership thing?

Yes, Winkfp can do it, but you've got to know how to set it up correctly.

If it's the flashing issue to begin with.

Do you have an ISTA-P report of what was done? What was the purpose of you attempting ISTA-P on it?

I only used ISTA-P just to see if it would communicate to the car. It did, and I paged through the commands but I got an uneasy feeling that it was risky. My intent was not to do anything that would code or change memory, just get familiar with the tool.

I plan to read up carefully on Winkfp, already watched a few youtubes on it.

Since you can get codes, I doubt the flash memory is corrupted.

Is it cranking slowly? Do you see any rpm signal either in diagnostics or on the cluster?

It is cranking at normal speed (not slowly). The RPMs do show while cranking (~200 RPM)

Back to this issue now. INPA or ISTA-D are not displaying anything that would indicate a problem that would cause this. Anybody have any ideas?

I do not want to hook up ISTA-P for fear of me messing something up further.

The car did start up and run for a while when I sprayed Starting Fluid in the air cleaner.

    Injectors disabled for some reason??

    RESOLVED!

It has started and is running fine now.

The cause of the no start is a bit of a mystery. The diagnostic software is ruled out because I did nothing to reset or program anything to fix it.

I sprayed Starting Fluid in a few times to see if it had spark, maybe that did something to either deflood the cylinders or draw fuel in faster, I don't know.

Another possibility is that the fuel pump was stuck and when I tapped the fuel tank it started the pump rotating again. It started and ran fine after this but wow, what a coincidence if so, I had no fuel pump problems prior to this.

Anyway, I am back and going again.

You should probably change that fuel pump out. It was a coincidence.
