Hi, so first post here so I drive a 535 xi 2008the car drove fine until yesterday when it prompted an error code saying 4x4 malfunction I freaked out and turned off the car, then attempted to turn on the car to see what the problem was the car didn’t start first thing that came to mind the battery. we attempted a jump start and nothing I left the car as it was very late night asked for a ride and came back today in the morning to turn it on today all I had to do was perform a normal turn on with the button and break everything was fine,I went to the auto store for some things let the car on scared it would turn on after turning it off no error codes nothing I drove home and pulled into my driveway turned off the car and turned it back on to see if it would work and it did so I attempted to reverse into the driveway in an attempt to trickle charge the battery but as I was reversing and going up a small ledge from the driveway and road the car lost it and everything flared up from 4x4 error trannsmision error abs dcs and the engine light came on so turned off the car as it wouldn’t let me change from reverse into drive or neautral and turned it on it let me drive for about 10 seconds made a few loud noises and the I drive turned off and the steptronic shifter symbol came on on the dash since the car was making all those loud noises and onlylet me drive not reverse I went around the block and it made a lot of loud noises prompted transmission errors and abs and dcs dtc 4x4 well to be honest I’m scared lol don’t wanna let the car die don’t wanna sale it and just wanna hear what y’all think it could be or what you guys would do im still under extended warranty for tansmission drive train allwheel drive and the motor any advice would be greatly appreciated thank you. Edit and it’s weird the green light on the steptronic shifter turned off and got stuck in the drive or parking position

You're going to lose a lot of people before mid way with that (lack of) punctuation.

It's going to need a scan before you can know what is really going on. I think I see possible low/dying battery issues, as well as possible 4wd transfer case issues.

Have the car flatbedded to a BMW specialist shop. They will read all the codes in all the computers, and diagnose the problem(s).

    Do NOT drive the car.

As I was reversing and going up a small ledge from the driveway to the road the car lost it and everything flared up. I got a 4x4 error, transmission error, abs/dsc and the engine light came on. I turned off the car as it wouldn’t let me change from reverse into drive or neutral. I turned it back on, and it let me drive for about 10 seconds, before it made a few loud noises and the I-Drive turned off and the steptronic shifter symbol came on. Since the car was making all those loud noises and only let me go forward, not reverse, I went around the block.

It made a lot of loud noises, prompted transmission errors and abs and dcs, dtc and 4x4. Well, to be honest I’m scared, lol. I don’t want to let the car die, don’t want to sell it, and just want to hear what y’all think it could be or what you guys would do.

I'm still under extended warranty for transmission, drive train, all wheel drive and the motor. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Edit: And it’s weird - the green light on the steptronic shifter turned off and got stuck in the drive or parking position.
If we're going to fix it, let's fix it all the way. (Yes, I still left a couple of sentences ending in a preposition, but we'll call that poetic license).

Still the same advice, though: flatbed it to a BMW specialist shop.

nice - well done. ahh, the ol' preposition - can dangling participles be far behind?

@drivesnice - please know, we're not trying to be rude or mean. we're just trying to help you get the most likely chance of getting folks to read/respond to your question. as the others have said - please get the car scanned by a BMW pro and do not drive the car before going much further. this is step 1 in this situation.

THANK YOU, SIR, for having a great attitude, and bearing with this old, pedantic fart (me). While we are attached to "readable" posts, on this forum, you will have the input of some excellent resources....like 328 Power 04, the best BMW computer guy I know.

We very much welcome you to the forum, and I promise we won't linger on precise grammar and punctuation in future, if you'll continue to humor us by throwing in a paragraph break now and then.

Again, my thanks for your great attitude and sense of humor.

My advice, and that of the two wonderful people who have answered, will remain the same: You need to start by knowing what the ~50ish computers of your car already know.

I've seen something as inexpensive as a wheel-speed sensor cause similar issues, so a complete examination of the data is crucial.

just fyi - this might be one of the models that needs the DME programmed to know it has a new battery.
