Tilt steering not working

My automatic tilt on my 2007 530i is not going up when I turn the key off and will not project in or out it will go up and down ? It does work with the button but only up and down

Check fuses first

Checked fuses all good . I can hear the motor running only when I touch the button on steering column it only tilts up and down . before when I turn the car off and open the door it would tilt up but not no more

Just started it and everything back to normal?? Battery?

mine has been doing this lately, I have notice it also makes like a squealing sound when it is going back up or I am moving it up almost like it is dry and needs to be lubed up or something, I was thinking about maybe spraying some wd40 on the gears but wanted to make sure there isn't anything that will be damaged by me doing that.
