    M62tu code 33.. TCG?

Well I treated the ol 540 with some wheels.. I got some 18" Beyern mesh staggered wheels and got them on. Next day cel comes on. Code 33 Vanos inlet camshaft control bank 1. I can hear some chain slap... I took a video scope and looked in the oil fill hole towards the center and it looks like the guide is gone. this could throw the code? Bad cam position sensor? Vanos solenoid? I'm sure it been gone over but what's the best way to verify the guides are bad? Since I heard the chain slap I haven't really driven it and don't plan to until the problem is verified and addressed.

Drop the oil pan and see what's in there besides oil.
How many miles on the car?

Since its a 'control limit' error, its unlikely the cam sensor. The solenoids possibly could cause inability to hit control target but those really have (luckily cuz they $$$) a super low failure rate. Sounds like you are visually and audibly confirming some guide loss... so... Like Jim says drop the pan and look for the debris.

If you have circa 150k miles on it, likely bad guides. If mileage is considerably lower, try replacing the chain tensioner.

been awhile. forgot about the thread. it was infact the TCGs. ordered from fcpeuro and took roughly 8 hours and shes back on the road. also ordered the timing tools on ebay.... they are surprisingly decent tools! everything worked out fine. upper timing covers had to come back off due to oil leaking where the block, upper timing cover, and valve covers meet. still seeps a little but i can live with it!

Did you reseat all the studs on the cam caps? The studs should be protruding more then 17.5mm from the top of the caps.
