    diagnostics

I have down loaded the INPA software and associated software. I have ordered and received the USB to OBD2 connector hardware. I have not connected anything to the vehicle as I am afraid I will (brick) it and turn it into a lawn ornament. Has anyone else felt this way and should I just go for it. I have no CELs and the car runs excellent. I was just curious and really would like to wander around the cars brain. What to do??

You'll be fine. I haven't bricked mine yet Knockwood. The worst you could do is clear adaptations but that's no biggie it'll relearn. You would have to put the Ecu in read/write mode with jumpers before you'd need to worry

Gees, it took me about a week of checking and trying to be sure of what I was really downloading. I guess I was really skeptical. I seriously think I will connect it all up tomorrow and see what happens. Still a little chicken though. I'll post the progress and findings.

Set everything up today. Plugged everything in and turned it on. NOTHING at all. It does not read anything. Back to the drawing board as they say.

Yes, it has to be exactly right. Follow EVERY step of instructions EXACTLY (I assume you're using these instructions: http://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/sh...xperimentation . I never really knew what I did wrong the first time. I just started over from beginning, and it worked.

My experience exactly. It’s almost as if you have to take a run at it once to soften the resistance.

Hi chuter, dumb question, or should i say pardon my ignorance. Why not use a BMW obd reader or the like? Why go through the trouble of INPA software setup?

Because INPA gives much more information and reads more modules that an ODB reader.

As I have stated I have been trying to get this up and running with no success. I have tried to go back and download again but system states I can't download it again for some reason. I am totally frustrated with this as to me the instructions seem to be misleading and contradictive. I have a good scanner and will use that if I have any problems in the near future. It is not that important as I really only wanted to just see if I could make it work. I can't and to hell with it. I will check again sometime in the future and maybe by then someone will have a program that is way less complicated. Thanks alot guys. P.S. I'll just drive the crap out of it..

I also recommend trying this as well as z3forlife mentioned if you haven't already...

It's been a while since I installed mine so I vaguely remember details, but I do recall fiddling to enable usb comm port to get the cable working (unless you have serial port version).

I'm done, I do not want to spend any more time on it. Some may get it to work but as of now I can't and I know when to say enough is enough. Thanks to all for trying to help, believe me I appreciate it. Chuter
