1998 BMW 323i Fully Automatic
When I bought the car the front windows were non-functional due to lack of lubrication. The previous owner, whom I know and trust, told me he couldn't demonstrate the top because he couldn't get the windows down. I got the windows working but the top does nothing. I read through the manual. The first thing it says to do is release the lever on the left rear side. There's no lever that I can find in the back seat area. The battery has been disconnected several times throughout this process, in case that makes a difference. Your help would greatly be appreciated!
Sounds like you have a full auto top with the only requirement is to push the top down button.
Full auto tops automatically lower the windows enough for the cycle to continue on it's own. You do not need to lower the windows first.
The lever is to manually release the top and tonneau motors. Then you use the hex key to unwind the top latching system at the header panel under the black square. If you pull that lever you will need to re-synchronize the system. There is a specific procedure for this. I suggest you do a little more research before moving forward.
Check the various fuses associated with the top, including the one on the battery cable in the trunk.

You might have several things to do because of disconnecting the battery. One thing I found on my 96 328i conv, is that my windows did not go down automatically but did operate independently from individual switches on the console. This was a good clue since I had checked just about everything I could think of. (see my post about top being dead ) Just make sure you check that #7 fuse.

Got it working sorta. I missed a blown fuse. Problem now is that the deck lid isn't rising evenly. The Driver's side is hitting the top and causing it to stall and jam.
