Hello,
I have a 1997 2.8L Roadster with low mileage (19,700 mi.) that has been kept in a garage. I am trying to find out how much it's worth, and also where I should try to sell it. I want to avoid Craigslist if possible.
When I try to look online, I have had little success finding comparable cars because of the mileage. Car dealers around here are telling me they can give me around $4,000, which seems pretty low given its condition.
Thanks for any suggestions that anyone could make.
That is low mileage.
But, it’s still 21 years old.
Has it been well maintained? I refer to the rubber bushings particularly.
That being said $4k is ridiculous.
I paid about that for a 68k in poor condition. But it had a hardtop.
I would want at least $8k if in good condition.
Any more and a buyer could get a well sorted 3.0 or even a fairly decent M.
Don’t discount craigslist.
That’s where I found my M Roadster.
With the global craigslist search it’s not just a local listing site.

You can get the idea here...
http://www.kbb.com or what most dealers use is http://www.nada.com
Looks like average retail is about 5.7K. And that does not even taking low mileage into consideration. I would never listen to the dealerships. They would low ball as they also need to make some $$$ on it. The car is probably worth 6K-8K easy. I would be shocked if either carguru or autotrader did not have similar cars for sale.

It definitely depends on the condition of the car. If it has sat a lot without use, plenty of things could need replacing. With evidence of good maintenance, I agree with the other posters on value. I might know someone that would be interested in your car, too.
If you somehow just came into it and don't know its history, if it was abused, damaged or not maintained, if it was driven in salt, or abandoned for years in that garage -- then I think $6,000 or less. If you are the 1st or 2nd owner, if the car was regularly used in fair weather and maintained as a garage queen 2nd or 3rd car, if the paint and top and interior are reflective of the miles -- then I think $10,000 or more.

Just did a cargurus search and filtered by miles and 2.8 trim and came up with two hits. Both have less miles but asking price is between 13-15K.
https://www.cargurus.com/Cars/invent...edEntity=c5208
That does not mean it would sell for that much but in your case I think 8-10k is very reasonable. Unless it’s like new, looks and drives etc...
good luck!
Those are good points. I checked CarGurus too.
But asking price is just that, sale price is a different matter.
$10k would be right up there for a 2.8

Thanks for the replies. It's actually my father-in-law's, and he's had it since 1998. He's the second owner. It looks new. He's definitely babied it, and only driven it when it's sunny out.
It's in great shape, with up-to-date safety and emissions inspections. He's got the tonneau cover and a full cover, and installed a better sound system (maybe the original owner did this, I'd have to ask). The comment about rubber bushings makes a good point; I'd have to check them.
I searched the forums here to see comparable prices, and cargurus. As magnetchief said, it's hard to establish an actual selling price from an asking price when you look at those listings. But it does give me some perspective, aside from the low mileage.
Put it on BaT with no reserve. Guaranteed to sell well. They love low mileage cars there.
