I'm looking to replace one of my headrests; it is pretty worn. It also looks as if it tilts forward more than the passenger side. I guess there is no tilt function? It does operate up and down. But, how does one remove these powered headrest?
You have to pull the seat back panel off to get to the clips on the two headrest shafts. Then you can slide the headrest up and off the seat. The hard part is removing the seat back panel without breaking the spring clip mounts on the panel.

The electric front seat headrests can be removed by pulling them out. I recommend extending the headrest to their highest point & tilting the front seat backs slightly...then climbing into the rear seat and giving them a good tug. The purpose of tilting the seat and doing it from the back is to give you more space to pull the extended headrests out. If you have the seats in normal position and your pulling the headrest out vertically...you have less room and may hit the headliner...tilting the seat gives you more room.
BTW, the electric headrests move upward/downward when using the switch...but can also be tilted MANUALLY fore/aft. So if one headrest seems to be tilted differently than the other...just take your hands to change the tilt. (this applies to the headrests on the basic 10-way seat & 12-way sport seat...I can't remember if the 16-way comfort seat headrests tilt)

Pull headrest upwards firmly.
If necessary, pull headrest to the uppermost notch upwards and swing to and fro at the same time.

Didn't they have a lock clip? Could have sworn they did, unless I'm confusing myself with a newer BMW.
