My mother has an E34 540i with 230k miles on it. At one point, I had to replace the clutch and flywheel. Over $1k in parts. She justified it pretty simply: A new car payment would be minimum $3-400/month depending on what you bought (or even much, much more). If her $1k she spent on the old car in repairs kept that car on the road for at least 3 more months, then it was money well spent.

If it 's cheaper to repair than replace, repair.

And it's almost always cheaper to repair.

I have a 2008 328ix Sportwagon with 126K miles and the original clutch. It will probably run another 20K miles or more on that clutch. And at that time I will gladly pay a shop to replace it, because a clutch is cheap compared to a good, reliable car. I've thought about doing the clutch myself, because I've done my share of them....but at age 68 now, and probably 71 or 72 when that event happens, I frankly don't look forward to rolling around under the car in my garage and wrestling the transmission in and out. I think that particular job should be done by someone named "Not Me."
