Hello, I have a 3.45 LSD Differential we pulled from a 1997 840ci. From my research its from a 850csi, Is this correct? or a Alpina B12 5.0.
Can anyone help clear this up?
IMHO, that is actually a good gear set for an 840. I have a 3.23:1 LSD in my 97 850/5-speed auto and that is great gearing for the V12.
3.45:1 is not from a stock CSi, the Alpine catalog list a 3:45 ring/pinion set.
The African 850-M70/automatic had a 3:45:1 open diff.
Also, the Euro E32, 735 had a 3.45:1 LSD diff.
With that, Owners have been upgrading diffs since the first cars so I wouldn't doubt this is a 1-off upgrade since the 3:45:1 ring/pinion and LSD units use to be readily available beyond the complete diff assembly from BMW.

Yes I believe it is a upgrade but my question is are the internals 3.45 LSD Factory or aftermarket? And if factory what are they out of?
The complete 3.45:1 Diffs are NLA from BMW.
Also, BMW does not sell Diff gears anymore.
NLA Complete Diff Part numbers:
European E32-3.45:1/LSD: 33 10 1 213 921
African E31-3.45:1/Open: 33 10 1 213 895
