So my water pump was making some horrible noise from the bearings so I replaced it. The PO had done the water pump maybe 50k miles ago. The one that came off looked the same as the one I put on. Aftermarket pump for about $60. Really it's just a seal and a couple of bearings I didn't see the need to spend $200 on OEM. My daughters car was making and even worse noise so hers got swapped out as well her car has 90k. You could grab the pulley and move it all around it was crazy loose. Neither pump was leaking.
I was giving my father in law a ride to the shop to pick up his E39 528i. He was on his third water pump. First one for him went 25k second one went 30k. I would guess the local shop is using aftermarket pumps. Hers's a photo comparing aftermarket with OEM,

Does anyone have experience with the lifespan of OEM vs. Aftermarket?

I've put in this one, should be same as original: https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw...mp-11510393336
Was debating using metal or plastic impeller, original and this one has the plastic one.
Only put in probably 2K miles so no idea about reliability, sorry.
OEM manufacturer is INA - that is what I got from the dealer
They both have metal impellers, one is cast and one is stamped steel. In all the cases I am aware of it's not the impeller but the bearings that cause replacement.

Maybe that's why BMW went with plastic impeller originally? To put less pressure on the bearings? Just guessing.
I used a Graf with the metal impellar and made sure i used the OE green gasket with the silicone bead applied to it from factory...

Replacing the water pump is not terribly difficult but it's still some amount of work. You also have to deal with the coolant which I have always found unpleasant. With that in mind why would you bother taking a chance with after market parts?! Max@ oembimmerparts has oem pump for ~$90 free ship/no tax.
I had a $60 dollar one go in 10K miles the bearing wobbled. Now I have Saleri
