I have a 1986 325es, it sat for a few years and had rough idle but would drive well. I cleaned the ICV and that helped some. Now after putting some fresh gas in the car it won't even idle. If it falls below 2000 rpm the car will just bog down and die. Trying to start the car sometimes the gas pedal is unresponsive. Driving the car power seems to go in and out and is really jerky. Measured fuel pressure at about 35 psi. Any ideas?
The diagnostics in the car are very rudimentary, unlike modern cars. As a result troubleshooting is very basic. I recommend you have the intake smoke tested as you likely have vacuum leaks. Also, I’d check the fuel pressure. I believe that the fuel pressure has to be at least 45psi. Lastly, check the condition of the ignition components:
- distributor cap
- rotor
- wires.
'86 325e runs 2.5 bar of fuel pressure, about 36 psi.
I completely agree with EVERYTHING else Marco recommended.
"Some" fresh gas? Did you drain the old stuff? Did you drain the old shellac from the fuel rail before trying to start it? Because old gas will clog injectors in about 2 seconds.
