    Spinning, spining, just keep spinning

Got in the car the other day and put the key in the ignition and it just went round and round. After jiggling it around for a few seconds, it clicked and has been fine since. Are there other reasons the key would spin in the ignition? Most point to the tab on the cylinder, so I've ordered another.

Mine spins too. I have the new cylinder but haven't installed it. If I move the steering wheel any tiny amount so that it locks in place then the key will spin. Otherwise it's fine.

Change it before you lose the chance to just change the tumbler itself instead of the whole steering column casting!

I look at it as +8, since I was without for so long.

Success! Thanks Timm for your excellent write up. I found the BMW key tumbler removal tool in my wife's bathroom drawer next to the hair brush. That's an odd spot for a car tool?

Great stuff! It's not unusual for car tool storage to be around the house - I keep some of mine in the kitchen drawer:

Love it, thanks Timm. We should start a thread with common house hold items used instead of official BMW tools!
