Looking to replace my 2006 E83 X3. Would like to get back to an E90. In looking (I'm in the Denver area) there is not a lot of difference price-wise from a 328xi to a 335xi.
Having a good relationship with a local independent shop, I've heard of the injector and HPFP issues (and read about them here) with the 335 and would be wary if they hadn't been done. With that, and given that the 335s are turboed, is it best to just stay away from them (primarily from a reliability standpoint). I'm also old enough and have seen more than enough kinetics during the times I've been deployed, so the excitement differential doesn't really matter.
Thoughts appreciated!
If you don't want a fast, high-maintenance car, the 335xi is not for you. Neither is any BMW, to be pedantic about it. If you want performance and are willing to support the finicky beast, well, they are a BLAST to drive.
Are you gonna eat that?
In my opinion, a turbocharged car is very beneficial for the high altitudes of Denver and beyond.

I just logged in to ask this exact question for a friend. He's got his eye on an 08 335xi with 125k on the clock.
The dealer is asking 5g, but there's a Carfax that reports cosmetic damage, AND the PPI reports an oil pan gasket leak, misfire, aftermarket suspension work (Bikstein struts) a disconnected passenger seat wiring harness and no codes.
It's the last bit (no codes) that troubles me. It suggests that someone cleared them before dropping the car. Heck, this is a BMW... just because the CEL light isn't lit doesn't mean that there aren't faults. My F13 M6 often shows codes logged, though they're often temporary and unimportant, but they're still there. Showing nothing makes me wonder what's going on.
So, same question. With that sort of PPI, would you guys take a shit? My friend isn't afraid of doing his own work, but if it costs him another $5 grand in parts, he might as well look for a car with fewer miles without a Carfax.
Your thoughts?

Run like hell. The OPG is a huge job, and the misfire could be anything. Agreed on the codes, a BMW never has no codes. Somebody's going to take a bath on that car.

So . . .
I spoke to my local independent shop. And his take was that they "fear" any turbo with 100k+ miles from 2007 through 2011.
So I passed on all the 335xi cars in the area, and bought a 2009 328xi.
Agree on run like hell from the 08 described by @rkbaman.
Despite the advice imparted to him by way of my experience and this forum, I think he's going ahead with the deal. The car is only $5 grand, he's going to negotiate that down to cover at least part of the value of the OPG repair, and he's not afraid of turning a wrench.
I'm guessing his thinking is that even if it costs him another $2G on top of the car price to get everything fixed even if he had to replace the turbos, he's still got a way cool set of wheels pretty cheap. And because it's a 6MT, that has some appeal, I suppose.
Thanks for everyone's help!

Will be interesting to see how that's worked out for him in 6 months.

nobody ever seems to listen to good advise when given BMW is like on there 4 or 5th series of injectors, then the oil leaks, turbos, etc as the techs say more stuff to go wrong, get the non turbo car

Well, fellas, wisdom has prevailed!
With the advice of this group, and my 'spidey-sense' telling me that no codes = bad ju-ju, my friend walked away. He's still looking for an X-drive car, and he's upped his budget, so at least now we have something to go on.
Thanks for all of your help!
